Subject: Installing AC IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 3.9V6 5 Speed Reg Cab Dak. Bare bones. I mean this thing has no options at all. Kinda sucks but all i could afford at the time. Now i have alittle extra cash and like the truck. And with the summer weather here and being over 100F for the last two days. I was wondering how hard it would be to install a factory AC system out of a wrecked Dakota and into this one. Or do u you guys think it would be easyer just to sell and buy a Dak with AC already installed. I have no problem with the work have a shop but never installed or messed around with an AC system before

Message: The system itself is relatively simple. The install on the other hand would be pretty time consuming.
You would need to get all of the parts first. The compressor and condenser are the easy parts because they are in the engine bay. Then, in the cab, you would have to replace the control panel and add the evaporator to the HVAC box. IMO, you should just pull the whole box from the donor and junk your current on. The part # for the housing is the same, but there are a handful of extra flaps, and actuators that you would have to switch over.
Then, after all of that, I am not sure how much of a role the computer plays in the use of the AC. I know there are a few pressure sensors that shut the system down when the charge is low.
I am sure that it can be done, especially if you have enough time, and a donor vehicle. However, I believe that you would be better off getting a different vehicle. Removing the dash is a PITA.

Message: my 02 sxt 4x4 will only blow air out of the defrost vent and the lower vents for your feet, the selector knob doesnt click into the selections anymor, i already tested my blend air door motors and they r getting a current to them, it will switch the air from the defrost to the lower vents, but not the dash vents, could this be a problem with the ac control unit, or maybe just the knob itself ? i would appreciate any advice from anyone who has encounterd this problem.

Message: Chris - the controlling of the which vents to use is done via vaccuum.
there's a 2 actuators, check passenger side and driver side floor/under dash area
you can also remove the HVAC unit and check the vac lines on the back of it.

Message: i thought they were vacuum controlled but they are electronically controlled, i tested the actuators with a dvom and they do have current going to them, so the problem is somwhere in the control unit

Message: If you are really interested I have what you need. From a 97. I bought a wrecked 1997 in the rear. Fixed another 97 that was hit in the front(now driving), and I used interior panels and all power options to convert my 98 sport plain interior. I didn't use any internal componets though I built a complete system out of Single pole relays/SPLD. I am really considering becoming a member. I have been looking at this site for about 6 months now. I currently have 2 dakota. 1998 custom and a rare conditioned 1997. both black extended v8, 4wd. If anyone needs any wiring help let me know I most likely can figure it out. barnesjn@earthlink.net
