Subject: tranny help????? IP: Logged
Message: My engine light came on in my 01' 4x4 and I went to autozone to check the code and it said that it was the speed sensor. I replaced the sensor (thank you for the warning about the tranny fluid that comes out) but after starting the truck, the engine light comes back on after about 10 mins. Also, since I changed the sensor, the truck shifts horribly. For the first 10 mins. or so the truck doesnt even want to go over about 30mph. The tranny just keeps slipping. I added 1 quart of tranny fluid to replace what came out when I replaced the sensor, but it didn't help. Could I have gotten a faulty sensor? Also, why would the engine light remain on?

Message: Tranny fluid ? The speed sensor is in the rear end (on top of the differential) for my truck. Are you sure you changed the right thing ?

Message: Kowalski, don't know about the 45/545RFE but the 42/44/46RE's have a speed sensor for the speedo only on the tailshaft housing of the tranny. he didn't specify which engine/tranny.
dave, did you try resetting the PCM?
what type fluid did you use?

Message: Thanks - speed sensor for the 4.7 trucks is in the rear - that's why we don't have to change anything on the tranny when we change gearing. I didn't know they weren't all like that now.

Message: For my truck there is a vehicle speed control sensor located on the tranny, and an abs sensor located on top of the differential, that's what the guys at kragen told me anyway. The engine light went off for about 10 mins. after replacing the sensor on the tranny, but then came back on. I've also noticed that whenever I disconnect the battery it also will go off for 10 mins. or so, then come back on. I could try resetting the PCM agian, but I didn't think I needed to since the light went off (for about 10mins). It may not have been that sensor that was malfunctioning, but now I have the problem of the truck slipping in and out of gear. I don't remember excactly what type of atf fluid that I used, but I only used 1 quart to replace what came out when I changed the sensor. I just wanted to change the sensor before taking it to a shop, but now I have to fix the shifting problem that I have created too. It had no problems shifting before replacing the sensor. Thank you all for your help. It's not going to be motorcycle weather for long, so I have to get this figured out soon.

Message: If the 4.7; the 45 RFE tranny behind it would require the ATF +4; and this newer spec fluid is recomended as compatible with Mopar's other trannies. I'm not 100 % convinced his speed sensor is not in the rear yet - the light may still be on because the speed sensor in the rear hasn't been changed. Guys at Kragen may be mistaken; since the speed sensor was in the tranny in the older 42/44/46 RE's. Didn't most of our trucks change to the rear mounted sensor around '99 ?

Message: the rear diff sensor , i think, for trucks with the 42/44/46re is called the RWSS rear wheel speed sensor. usually when it goes out the speedo won't work below about 30mph and ABS & Brake lights would also be on.
he never mentioned any of that.
hmmm?

Message: Yeah, that seems to be the speed sensor that is most commonly problematical in the newer trucks; and could explain why the speed sensor code is still present. While most also report the other symptoms you mention, not everyone does.

Message: Thank you again for your help. I checked the sensor in the rear differential, but it seemed to be working correctly. I unpluged it and my brake/abs lights came on and the speedo. went all crazy so I plugged it back in and I believe it is working correctly. The guys at the auto parts store told me that the sensor in the diff. was called the abs sensor, and that was not the code that I got when I scanned the code. Last night I tried putting the old sensor back in the tranny that I replaced a few weeks ago when the shifting problems started. Sure enough, the truck drives normally again, with no problems shifting. I guess that the sensor they sold me was not correct or faulty. Anyways.....the truck is basically back to where I started, and the engine light has not come back on yet. I had the battery disconnected last night, so the light should come back on after I drive the truck for a while. I guess I will just wait to see.
