Subject: Exhaust Manifold Bolts IP: Logged
Message: 1998 Dakota 3.9L 4x4 92K
While changing spark plugs, I noticed that two bolts had broken off (closet to the firewall) on the passenger side exhaust manifold. These bolts had been broken off for some time. The truck's performance is good. At what point will this affect the performance and how? Also, is there an easy way to drill out the threaded stubs in the engine block?

Message: Depends on how far down they snapped. I had the same problem in the same area on my 4.7L. If you take off the manifold, there should be and inch or so of bolt sticking out. I just used a pair of pliers to loosen them and then just thread them out. New bolts at the dealership are about 2.50-3$. Don't forget the gasket.
As far as performance, I noticed no lack of power but did hear a ppffffftttt noise when I would floor it sometimes. Also if your manifold is leaking(which it probably is) it will get exhaust gases all over that side of the engine and in the cab, which is unhealthy.

Message: Lots of Dakotas are having the same problem. All years. Don't think I would go with FACTORY bolts. Your just asking it to happen again. Go to a nut and bolt place like FASTENERS INC. Tell them you want the best high temperature bolts they have. while your at it, be smart. Replace them all both sides and be done with it. once is enough to do a job. I like studs with nuts and washers myself.

Message: I've got the same issue with my 97 Dak 3.9 4x4. I've been putting it off for a while now..but the other weekend when I put in some Seafoam i noticed alot of the white smoke coming from the Manifold...so i guess its time to really get em fixed.
Anyone thought of replaceing the manifolds all together with Headers?
Any one have any advice? Recomendations?
