Subject: 2001 Dak QC 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: I am considering buying a used 2001 Dak QC 4x4 sport 6cyl with
73,000 miles on it. I have never owned a Dodge, and only drove a
Dak once. (Iliked it obviously) I drive highway and stop n go traffic
everyday to and from work. Am I gonna go broke paying for gas?
When I go and check out this Dak, what should I be on the look out
for? Anything shout out from that year as a red flag? Should I be
concerned bout recalls etc.? Thanks for all your help,
Monk

Message: Monk, regardless of what anyone tells you, the dakota sucks for gas mileage. 10-12 at best, and thats high way with a v-8 and i hear the 6 banger aint no better, read the forum and get ready for all the other dakota woes, we dont make this stuff up. dakotas are about the nicest looking truck, but their reliabilty sucks.

Has been a very reliable truck! The best yet of the vehicles I've owned.
Personally, expecially if you're going 4x4, get the 4.7, V8.

Message: 10 to 12 is more like stop and go. most get 18 give or take 1. my 99 318 gets 11 plus maybe one in town and 18.3 at 78 mph on highway summer time. drops about 2 mpg all around in winter.

Message: 10-12MPG highway at best,,, if you're towing 3000 to 5000#
I have owned 2 Dakotas (2000 CC and 2003 QC), 4.7 V8, auto, 2wd and they both got 13-15MPG city, 18-20MPG highway, 10-12MPG while towing. 4wd will cost you about 1 MPG.
My best suggestion is to forget the V6 and get the 4.7 V8. The V6 will only get 1 MPG better,,,,,, maybe 2MPG, but it's not worth the trade-off in performance. If you're going to tow, look for a 2003 or 2004 Dakota, they have 4 wheel disc brakes, with large front rotors and 2 piston brake calipers, a HUGE improvement over the older braking system.
One thing to be aware of while searching for a used vehicle, a clean CarFax report doesn't mean anything. I found this when buying a vehicle a few weeks ago. CarFax gives you info from the DMV and if it's been totalled, flooded, hail damaged, but from my experience,,, that's it. I looked at 4-5 vehicles that had obvious prior body damage that was repaired, but CarFax showed no damage. I live in the desert and used CarFax to weed-out vehicles that were from northern states (rust), but it didn't help weed-out vehicles that had been in accidents.
Also, go to edmunds.com, look at the Used Cars section of their front page and click on "Appraise Your Car". Edmunds is pretty accurate on the value of used vehicles.
Good luck
