Subject: Tire Size Question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2004 SXT 4x2. Tire size is 255/65R 16. I'm looking at new tires and the only size available at my Pep Boys currently is a 265/70R. They've assured me that they'll fit, however is this too big for my truck. Will it considerably affect gas mileage or my speedometer/odometer? Will my truck sit up higher than it does now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: 255/65-16 = 29" diameter.
265/70-16 = 31" diameter.
Might be a tight squeeze on a 4x2, they don't sit as high as the 4x4.
If you go with the larger tires, when your speedo indicates 57mph, you'll be doing 60.
The engine will work harder. Mileage will decrease.
On my 2004 4x4 with 4.7L engine and 3.55 diff gears, I went from 265/70-16 to 265/75-16 (about one inch diameter increase), and highway mileage dropped about 3mpg.

Message: 04 dakota,I had this issue with my 02 CC SXT and they will fit and will throw your speedometer off like Marv stated as far as gas mileage nothing drastic measure to worry still 17/22 with synthetic oils. And you will have a final gear ratio reduction from 3.55 to 3.43.I had these tires now with about 20,000+ miles no problems purchased from BELLE TIRE here in MI they are KELLY SARFARI SUV rated at 50,000 miles.Your height won't be noticeable much either. At the time when I purchased them not many tire places had OEM replacements to costly if they did so thats how I ended up with them but now see more places are starting to carry the OEM tire size and brands to choose from hopefully message helps some in your decesion making

Message: Buy them from Tire Rack.Com. Large selection and they come right to your door. Works great. Plenty of 255/65-16s.

Message: Taller tires also make your odometer run slower. so it would show you are getting worse mileage, when your mileage could actually be the same or better.

Message: There were two sizes available on the 04 Dakota:
255/65R16
245/70R16
There is less than .50 difference in the diameters. The 245 is narrower.
Check this site out, it has all the conversions on tire sizes:

Message: Suggesting that someone will or even may lose 3mpg with a one inch taller tire is a bit rediculous. That would be like me suggesting that you can pick up 3mpg just by going to a one inch smaller tire.
It AIN'T going to happen.
I run 30" tires (275/65/17) w/2-4 drop. The front tires rub on the frame when the steering wheel is turned lock to lock. The rear tires have hit the fender well when loaded with 800-1000 pounds. Other than that I have no problems.
FWIW, I get better mpg on the highway.

I run 30" tires (275/60/17) w/2-4 drop. The front tires rub on the frame when the steering wheel is turned lock to lock. The rear tires have hit the fender well when loaded with 800-1000 pounds. Other than that I have no problems. Sometime this year I plan on going to 275/55/17 in the rear and 205/70/15 on the front.
FWIW, I get better mpg on the highway.

Message: Thanks for all of your help. Pep boys ended up getting a new shipment of tires that were the same size: 255/65R/16. I got the Dakota Definitiy H/T Tires.

Message: The 3mpg was my loss after switching to the 32" tall tires.
When I stated his mileage would decrease, I based that on the 2" difference in tire diameters (longer torque arm).
That he decided to stay with original sized tires is a good thing.

Message: Not trying to get into an arguement, but I bet your odometer told you you were getting 3 mi. per gallon less, because it was registering slower because of the taller tires. When you change to taller tires check your odometer by the milemarkers on an Interstate for at least 20 miles. Both before and after the tire change...Or have it recalibrated.

Message: Another difference could be if the bigger tires have a more agressive lug design. I've seen one mpg difference due to that without even changing tire sizes.
