Message: i have a 1998 Dakota 4x4, i do a lot of work on the farm with it and a lot of off roading. it has the 3.9 v6 and automatic tranny. i get really bad gas mileage (around 14mpg) and it has no power. i am thinking about replacing the v6 with a v8 or a 6cyl diesel but im in school and don't have a lot of money. can anyone help me?

Message: With the amount of computer control in vehicles these days, swapping in a V8 with wiring harness and all the proper control modules and the right instrument cluster that go with it will most likely cost more than if you traded it on a V8-powered model. The Powertrain Control Module and instrument cluster are unique to each Dakota and programmed with VIN.

Message: ok start with a complete tune up
NGK FR5 spark plugs
good set of wires 8mm or 8.5
brass insert cap and rotor (napa carries echlin)
NGK O2 sensor (usually the first thing over looked)
lazy O2 sensor and you got a gas pig and poor performance
i recommend NGK O2 sensors because they respond quicker then bosch and last longer
next try a new Cat (high flow or free flowing)
and a performance muffler
and if your really wanting V8 power it would be far easier to just get a V8 truck (trade yours in)
