Subject: rear axle offset???
IP: Logged

Message:
I just put a set of 275/60 R15 tires all the way around my 2000 dakota. It has the factory 15X8 slotted rims. Now I just noticed that the passenger side rear tire sticks out about an inch past the body, but the driverside sits flush with the body. WHATS UP with this????
I have pics but cant figure out how to postem.
thanks

better take some measurements. my bed looks lined up good with the cab too. that is until you see the RR tire is sticking out beyond the bed about 1/2". i've seen other people post on here about the same problem.

Rear axle offset? Why would the factory do that. That seems odd. I only have stock rims on my 1997 Reg Cab Dak and the wheels are in the perfect spots All even with the finders Are u sure your Dak hasnt been in an accident and the frame is tweaked alittle? Or look at the U-bolts holding the rear axle and they are not kicked sideways. And another thing could be u have axle slop lift the rear tire in question off the ground grab it and push in and out with he Ebrake off see if there is anyplay in the axle other then that i dont see why dodge would do a rear axle offset

My 2001, Quad Cab, with the 16x8 rims,

are even on both sides.

I thought the 15's were 7 inch rims.

Your pinion shaft is offset to the ringgear, and the pinion is aligied with the driveshaft. To have the same length axle shafts (saves money to have one part) requires that the housing be offset by a small amount (matches pinion offset). This means your housing is offset to the chassie. You won,t notice it till you fill the wheelwell with tires. Its really noticable on older mustangs and camaros when you start putting on 10 inch or wider rims. A lot of hotrodders go to the expense of centering the housing by having the long side shortened along with the axle shaft.(alot easier on a 9 inch diff.)

I believe having the housing offset centers the wheels in the wells - like Texas Todd, my wheels are an equal distance from the fenders. The rear of my truck is centered, but the drive shaft is off center. Stock 15x8 rims on my truck; I think 15x7 for the base models.

Its good to have friends, had the frame checked and it passed within specs.

No axle slop

The sticker on my door says 15X8 I have the factory slotted 5 stars that look like smaller versions of the R/T rims. The door sticker on a friend of mine says 15X7 and he has the factory solid 5 star rim.

nothing broken or out of place on, around or in the springs

This really buggs me, in order to get my tire to tuck under the vehicle I might have to go to an axle shop and have them shorten the passnger side of my axle by 1".

I cant ignore this, because future plans are for a 18X9.5 rim w/ 295/45 R18's. I already have the rims just saving up for 5 tires, never could stand having an odd spare.

Thanks for the help

Check to see if your bed is square to the frame. You are only talking about moving your bed over by a half inch to center it over the tires.

after the bed alignment / suspension as been checked,

having one side of the axle tube shortened and machined is a very costly adventure

relocating the leaf spring mounts on the axle tubes would be a lot simpler and cheaper, imo

Blue......... Your bed is off an actual amount of 1/2 inch, half of what you measure at the REAR WHEELS. At the cab your going to have a time seeing it is off. MEASURE it very very careful. The difference is going to be very slight at that end. Myself having checked all else I'd be doing the box alignment.

Yup; there shouldn't be any need to start cutting axles and tubes if some of us are well centered with stock parts. Should just be a bed adjustment. If the bed looks even left to right at the cab, check for a difference in the reveal - it might need to be pivoted a bit, rather than the whole bed sliding over.
