Subject: Timing Chain IP: Logged
Message: So I decided since I have the next 2 days off that I'll replace my timing chain. I get as fair as needing to pull the damper off but I have no way of keeping it from moving. In my Haynes Manual it says to remove the starter and that'll keep the crank from moving so you can remove the damper. Does this actually work because in the process of trying to remove my starter my socket wrench broke, and the room mates gone so I'm stuck for a few hours. Any ideas?

Message: I assume your trying to remove the nut. Removing the strter allows you to jam a pry bar in the ring gear so the crank can not turn. In 40 years of having a shop I only ever had to do that one time. I loosened that nut BEFORE the fan belt came off. using an using a long handled cheater bar in 1/2 inch size, I whooped it a couple of times while trying to turn the bar at the point where the belt wanted to slip.I'd try whooping it as you got it . You might get lucky. If the radiator is out, an air wrench will do the trick. Last option. put a piston about 1/2 way down. Fill the chamber with rope. Be sure you keep enough rope so you can pull it back out

Message: Yea I didn't really think too far ahead. Just got off work and decided it needed to be done. I am limited to what tools I have at my apartment so I guess the starter is gonna have to come off. Thanks

Message: hey adam the bigger auto parts chain stores have tool loan programs
if there is something you need check your local Autozone or Advance auto parts
you leave a deposit and get it back when tool is returned

Message: I did that for the fan and the tool they gave me wasn't the right size. As for the Damper bolt I have no idea how to remove that. I'm doing this by myself and I removed the starter so I could stick a screw driver in between the gears but as soon as I try to loosen the bolt screw driver just falls out and everything turns.

Message: adam, i guess you have an auto trans? i think you're easiest solution would be to get a strap wrench big enough to go around the balancer to hold it from turning while you break the bolt loose. that you could do by yourself.
unless you could find a way to keep your screwdriver in place.

Message: I have a manual...I got the nut done. Now I'm ready to pull the damper. I took the dist. cap off to make sure I'm at top dead center. I'm confused as to where my balancer should be positioned compared to the marks on the timing chain cover. i have the dist. pointing to the #1 spark plug but on my balancer I'm at the very beginning of where the scribe marks are at the TDC position. There are three slits...one that goes across completely and 2 that are only half way. Is the longest one supposed to be positioned with the TDC mark?

Message: Turn the crank, looks like to the left from your pic, just a little. you want the Cam @ 6 and the crank @ 12.
