Subject: Warped front rotors IP: Logged
Message: It seems to very common for the front rotors on o4 Dakotas to warp. Everything I read, even after repair/replacement they warp again. Is there a better replacement rotor that can be suggested? Will that solve the problem?
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Message: Warped rotors are not nearly as common as people think it is. There's only one way to know if they are truly warped - use a dial indicater. A micrometer won't tell you what you need to know.

Message: I had the rotors warp 3 times on my 03 dakota while I was under the factory warranty. The first two time the dealer resurfaced them, the last time they gave me new rotors, and those only last about 25,000 miles before warping again. Now that I am outside of the warranty period I replaced the rotors with powerslot rotors and hawk pads. Ive only put 10.000 miles on them but them feel 100 times better than the stock ones.

Message: Hey Bob thanks for the link, lots of good info. I need to check my rotors for run out as well as thickness variation. Then I will probably start with getting the rotors resurfaced. I am not sure I fully understand the root cause yet, but the information also talked about pad type. If the factory rotors start to pulsate again after resurfacing, maybe I will need a better rotor and pads per Dmakdak's suggestion. Dmakdak you should also check out the link Bob suggested, it is great info.
Thanks guys

Message: NAPA ROTORS... They sell a cheap set and a good set. Good ones only cost me 56 and change each Jobber price. Never changed the factory pads. Brakes work great. been there now for 50,000 plus miles and pads still are better then 1/2 there

Message: 'Warped Rotors'???
Did you read this link?

Still think you have 'warped' rotors?
Funny how my 2001 Quad cab, 4.7 manual, has the original brakes, rotors, pads, never turned the rotors, etc., and has over 119,000 miles.

Message: Good article, never heard of that idea before. According to it the way to fix the problem is to clean off the rotors or get new pads, it also says the way to avoid the problem is to have the pads properly set and broken in. But whether my rotors were "warped" or not the vibrations would start up every 12,000 miles or so. I have a manual tranny like TexasTodd and use it to my advantage so my brakes are in no way abused. So for $200 to get powerslot/hawk rotors and pads and not have to worry about it anymore and have better performing equip. was well worth it.

Message: Agreed.
With my brakes, actually having the miles I've said, I deserve new aftermarket brakes, soon.

Message: There are a lot of misconceptions here. (1) Warped brakes cannot be repaired. I work for a powdered metal facility and I deal with warped parts all the time. Warped would be classified as being able to set the object on a perfectly flat object (we use granite blocks) and seeing if you can rock it from one side to the other. If it truly warped you cannot machine it to fix it. (2) How in the hell would you check for warp with a micrometer? (3) If you are checking for runout it would not be that hard to do with a micrometer. Just find the highest reading and if you are using a digital one just zero it off and go back around. This will let you know your runout/parallelism of the rotor. This can be fixed to a certain extent. I know a work at the most we would let up to on runout (on big parts) would be 15 thousandths or .015 of an inch. For a rotor I do not know what would be acceptable, but I could figure that I would not want much over 10 thousandths of an inch. A dealer tech might know more. They might let up to 30 thousandths. I know that usually the bigger the diameter the runout you are going to be susceptible to. Thanks.

Message: Also, rotors and pads will fade and go bad quickly if you do a lot of sudden stops. That or high speed stops. When they heat up, then get cooler they tend to tear up. I have seen dumba$$es heat their rotors up real bad then through water on it. It is like when that damn thing cracks and fails on you I am going to hate to be you.
