looked like Dakota's) were 100% same everything.

Some Dakotas come with bigger brakes I think...perhaps THOSE are the same as the Durango/Ram brakes?

That's a great write-up you found though...I bookmarked it. Thanks.

GB2000 -- Thanks for the kind words, it was a fun project.

From my research, there were no larger brakes on the dakota until 2003. While those 03 dakota brakes are dual piston and probably huge step up from the crap single piston ATE's, they're a little bit smaller than the 03 durango's. The rotors are also a little bit thinner than the 03 durango's (by a couple millimeters).

Here's a chart:

Vehicle year: 2003
Vehicle Make: DODGE
Vehicle Model: DURANGO
Outside rotor diameter: 308mm (12.13")
Rotor height: 61.1mm
Rotor thickness: 28.1mm
===============
Vehicle year: 2003
Vehicle Make: DODGE
Vehicle Model: DAKOTA-4 WHEEL DRIVE
Outside rotor diameter: 308mm (12.13")
Rotor height: 62.9mm
Rotor thickness: 26mm
===========
Vehicle year: 2001
Vehicle Make: DODGE
Vehicle Model: DAKOTA-4 WHEEL DRIVE
Outside rotor diameter: 287mm (11.3")
Rotor height: 64mm
Rotor thickness: 24mm

giddyup.

I've been looking to upgrade the brakes on my Dakota. It appears the 03's have dual piston calipers up front and disks in the rear. However, I'm having trouble finding reliable information. Does anyone have information on what parts to swap from the 03? Dan's information on the Durango swap is the only information I can find. By the way Dan good article!

I completed this project over the weekend. I must say thanks to Dan for sharing this. Of all the Mods completed to my mine or any other dakota, this is the best, I'd even consider upgrading the wheels to complete it(16 inch REQUIRED)if you don't have then already. Everyone wants speed, but even with speed, you must stop at some point or another. YOU R/T guys need to look at this HARD, You wanna stop, THIS WORKS.

Dan did the hard part, follow his list of parts, and it will all fall together. And you won't have another front brake problem. Granted I just completed the project, but You would not believe the diffderence with driving it. These brakes where not this good coming of the lot new.

As a bonus, Napa calipers are same core charge as your old ones, so they will give you all of your core charge back.

Glad you found an upgrade to your brakes.

I have a 2001, 4.7, QC SLT, manual tranny, trie and handling, trailer towing, (These packs come with the 11 inch rear drums), etc.
Just over 120,000 miles.

With, the original brakes! Original everything, rotors, (never lathed), pads, shoes, drums, etc.

When it was new, the pedal pulsated a few times, but always quit doing it about a day later, and hasn't done it in over 50,000 miles.

Stops fine.

Todd,"These packs come with the 11 inch rear drums". my '00 QC Sport 4x2 5sp has 11" drums also. no tralier tow option. i believe DC put the 11" drums on all QC's except whatever yrs had rear discs.

76k just changed my front pads, didn't have to turn the rotors, no pulsing and stops like it did when i bought it. i make sure i keep my rear brakes adjusted and i bedded in the new pads.

I am looking in to doing this break mod on my 99 R/T. I was reading the page that explains step by step how to do this and have a question. The article states that this is for 4X4 only due to different suspension set ups. So my question is, What would I need to do different for this to work on my R/T. Thanks Guys

Need to do some research on parts, Dan and I have been chatting some since, he may have started already. Let me check a few things and I'll post later.

I think this is the greatest thing since they invented sliced bread. I'm taking it easy EBC say's 300 miles on the rotors til you should brake hard. One more day to work and back, then I'm going to STAB EM, of course after I tighten my seat belt, to keep from going through windshield...LOL

I also did the swap on my 02 Dak a couple of weeks ago. I was able to reuse the rotors, calipers and pads from the Durango. I also bought the rear disc brakes from the Durango. I will try that swap when I get time. It stops much better than when it was new. I recommend this swap to anyone that truely wants improved breaking.

Ray

I crossed checked some parts, all seemed ok til I got to the tie rods. but only with 2003 Dakota brakes. 2003 both dakota and durango had dual piston calipers, but durango is slighly bigger. I do not know enough about the coil suspension system to know if there is a way around the tie rods or not. Without looking or knowing what it looks like with the different steering knuckle.

Maybe at least this will help you get started to more stopping power.

Problem Child -- hey you stab your brakes yet?

Unfortunately I've been extremely busy with work and haven't had much opportunity to assist with the 2WD research. Doesn't look to be letting up for me for the next month or so.

But excellent work on your preliminary findings!

No, I haven't stabbed em, to tell you the truth. I have no need anymore to worry about stopping. With the new steering knuckles, Moog upper and lower ball joints, National Bearing hub assemblies, Hawk Pads, EBC sport rotors, and Napa calipers. I'll tell ya, this truck will like never before, STOP ON A DIME, AND HAND YOU THREE CENTS CHANGE!!! If I towed I would look into the rear brakes, but I don't have a need for it. This new set up is just AWESOME.

Has anyone looked into the 2wd Durango/Dakota swap? This looks to be an excellent upgrade. I've looked on Car-Parts.com and there are 2wd Durango parts available but I need to know if they will fit my 2000 Dakota.

I have done some searching on 2wd swap, all the parts match except the tie rods. I'm not for certain, but I would think a good machine shop could get the steering knuckles to work with the tie rods. As for the the cost to do that, as well I'm not certain. But I'm sure it could be done.

Howdy -- thanks ProblemChild for your work. You know, I bet the taper on the tie rods are probably identical.

Anyone interested in this for the 2WD should go down to a NAPA with a measuring caliper and compare the two tie rods (2WD 03 Durango vs 2WD 01 Dakota).

The racks may be different between the two trucks, which could account for a difference in threading or length of tie rod. But heck for this project you're only concern should be your end point, provided the spindle's tie rod recess locations are geometrically identical.

Sure would like to get a look at both spindles up close to compare. Bone yard is too far from here for me to go look. :O(

I just checked the NAPA web site and compared an outer tie rod end of a 2003 2wd Durango and a 2000 Dakota 2wd and they are the same! I guess this means there is a hope that 03 big brakes will fit on earlier Dakotas. Now...what about the spindles?

I've been getting quite a few inquiries on this, the brake page is still available.. it's just that I have removed non-https traffic through my firewall.

You can still get there by going to: https://bigdakotabrakes.gotdns.com/brakes.html
