1993 dakota 5.2L auto 4x4 cc
I got discharged from the navy honorably friday, and started my drive back home. I got 66 miles away and the truck died. I checked it out and couldnt figure out why it wouldnt start. Then i checked for spark and noticed it had nothing. I also noticed the spark plugs were bone dry even after trying to start it. It does crank over, and spits and spudders sometimes. well, i had it towed to the "most reputable" shop around. the next day they fixed it saying it was the pickup underneith the rotor and cap. they said it blew out the coil. The truck was running, and thats what i cared about so i paid the $300 (i know i know) and hit the road. about 50 miles later same damn thing happened, the engine does not have spark. if i let it sit forever, it will run again like nothing ever happened. it may run for 1 minute or 30 minutes. It seems like something is killing the spark and maybe shutting off the injectors at the same time. NO CODES ARE POPPING UP AT ALL. my thoughts right now, is the computer is shot. i talked to an ex-mechanic and he said the OBD1 dodge pickups are know for the computers going out. i guess once the computer gets hot it kills the spark. whatever the case is, im stranded in some redneck town right now and i gotta wait till tuesday to get a new computer in. If anyone has a clue as to what i should try, please leave a comment.

Hope your not buying a new computer without testing the old one . There pricey. Unless your at a dealer, I doubt the shop has the tester required. If your buying used, it has to be same year truck/engine/trans. Can you actually tell if the pick up is new? Is it by chance loose, not tihtened properly.
My thoughts------ Your actual coil is defective. They can short internally and as thry heat up they break contact and engine stops. It cools down and works again till hot. Before spending a bunch of bad money I'd test it. Don't know if you got any tools but a cheap volt meter will help a lot. Take readings on the coil. Can you start the truck and let it idle till it quits? then first check if you have power to the coil. If the tester says 12V then I think I would risk trying a another coil. No-resister type only. Far as I know All the computerized Dakotas have the resister built into your PCM. I can't believe your PCM is Bad with no codes. They either work or don't period. Not going to be here again for a while so if I'm wrong hopefully soneone smarter then me can help. Good luck

Disconnect the battery, both pos. and neg. terminals, try to start it with the key (with the batt. disconnected). Reconnect up the battery and then try to start it - see if it thows any codes then.

Could be several things, relay, crank sensor, computer, etc. Computers don't go bad that often IMO - I used to see them hung for other problems all the time though.
My bet is crank sensor OR ASD relay.

by the way, it still spits and spudders sometimes. i cant believe a coil would go bad that fast, as it was replaced yesterday. but if it was, why would some cylinders get good spark and some only sometimes and some not at all? its definately getting gas too cause the plugs get wet now. im really getting fed up with this truck.

Intermittent spark again indicates possible coil failure . Thinks mentioned above??? Check them all for bad connections. That also can cause intermittent ignition

Seen something like that before the contacts in the Cap have rusted/oxidised up and it gets a strong spark to some cyclinders and weak or no spark to others. After awhile of this it over heats the coil

I'm betting dist cap, and maybe wires and rotor. I change them every 30K miles. Also, the aluminum contacts are known to corrode badly. They turn to white powder (aluminum oxide). Use a cap with brass contacts. Whatever you do, don't replace the computer. It's a lie that they fail often.

have you ever re-done the infamous splice #115? the one in the harness below the power dist. box.

I agree with jjj.

Sounds like a crank sensor with an intermittent problem. It can give an intermittent spark, that's why it sometimes sputters, or no spark at all. It is frequently diagnosed as a typical ignition problem. The first thing most people do is look at the cap, rotor, coil, etc.

yes. ive replaced the coil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pickup. at that point it still dies. then i respliced the only 3 wire splice in there that i could find. it wasnt corroded at all, but i did it anyways. it was about 6 inches in the harness below the PDS. after that it still wouldnt start. then i let it sit for like 5 or 6 hours and it did start after a bit of cranking. ran for a while and spuddered once and almost died during that, but kept on running fine. i already have the computer and the crank sensor on order from napa and will be here tomorrow morning so, im just gonna dump that in too so i know there is no way in hell something can be wrong with the ignition system.

By the way, have you load-tested the battery? Measured its on and off voltages? Tested the alternator? Cleaned the battery terminals? Any of these could cause the problem.

B4 installing the computer make sure that you install the crank sensor. If it works, as I suspect, you can return that expensive pcm.

update: i replaced the crank sensor and it still doesnt start. so, after the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pickup, coil, and crank sensor are replaced, it must be the pcm. i can think of nothing else that would have an effect on the igniton system. if anyone thinks it might be the battery, the battery is good too. the pcm comes into napa in 1 hour so, ill see what happens then.

did you try to just unplug the pcm and check all the connections for dirt or corrosion? soemtimes just unplugging and reconnecting will clean them up enough to work.
