Message: I am going to change the oil in my '93. Of course I am going to use synthetic oil.
I was wondering why you couldnt use a straight 30 weight oil instead of a 10W30? Would it hurt to use a straight 30 weight oil?

Short answer:
Multi weight viscosity oils (10w-30) were developed for a reason. Thinner upon start up (10w) when most of the damage can happen to an engine, and thicker (30w) at operating temperature for maximum protection.
Do not use a straight weight oil. It is too thick at engine start up, will not flow fast enough to protect the internal parts, and will not provide adequate protection when the engine is cold and the oil has drained into the pan.
Hope this is sufficient.

Message: Hahahaha! I had a girl in my English class back in HS with a fairly new car...she'd had it around 2-3 years and hadn't changed the oil in it once.
She was freaking out because her check engine light had kicked on and her engine was making weird rattling noises.
...I wonder why?

Message: Ya some poeple are just retarded when it comes to maintance. I remember a friend telling me when he used to work at the dealership he had an old lady come in with a 3 year old car and was wondering why the engine was making this nasty howling noise. So the dealership took it in and pulled the motor apart to find that the oil filter was the orginal and the oil what was left of it was black as could be(they are guessing orginal oil) But anyway the lady had ran the oil for so long it started to weld the main crank bearings to the crank amoung other things

Message: My truck has over 205,000 miles on it. I change the oil religously. I was googling when I found a forum thread that suggested that during the summer months it was OK to use a straight weight oil on older V8's. I think i'll stay w/ the 10W30 that I've been using.
