Subject: Clicking noise from rear '01 dak slt 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: just started getting a clicking noise from the right rear of my truck. it comes and goes and increases and decreases with tire rotation speed. at high speed i hear nothing at slow speed it is more noticabe. it is louder when on dirt road than paved. i cant see anything obvious around the wheel. the rear stabilizer bar has some play in it, it seems loose almost. when i turn a corner the sound decreases

Message: That souunds like a CV joint going bad. Jack it up & check the rubber boot on the joint for cracks, or if it's ripped or torn. If that's what's wrong the clicking noise is from the loss of grease in the joint and dirt, rocks, mud, whatever getting up in the joint. Sooner or later it will fail altogether. You might want to take a look at the other three joints while you're at it.
Hope this helps.

Message: No CV joint in the rear that I'm aware of. Check the drive shaft u-joints and the brake hardware.

Message: Yea there is no CV in the rear of the truck. I had a similar problem with an old car of mine and it turned out to be a bad bearing in the axle. THe uneven profile of a dirt road made the sound worse and when it gave out on me my car kinda "dropped" on one side. It was an ugly mess and I had to replce not only the bearing but the brakes too from the oil and the drum hitting the shoes when the bearings fell out. Good luck

Message: It's very easy to be wrong, I guess. I don't know much about 4wd but I thought there were cv joints in the rear on 4wd trucks. Sorry for the wrong post. I'll stick to trying to offer help w/electronic problems from now on out...

Message: Kowalski most likely has it right. Sounds like U-joints to me. Had exactly the same thing with my '00 a couple of summers back. You can order new joints with zerk fittings from NAPA.

Message: If you have rear disc brakes, check your emergency brake shoes located on the inside of your rotors. Happened to me. If so get the shoes from advance auto,$13.00 vs $139.00 at the dealer.
