Subject: Oil press drops at higher RPM's
IP: Logged

Message:
My oil pressure drops on the factory gauge at speeds over 75MPH. I am guessing a blockage in the oil returns or a problem in the oil pump pickup tube? Anyone experience this problem? Suggestions for "flushing" the oil system?

95 3.9 auto 131K, 16 lbs verified oil pressure @ hot idle in gear.

If you get good pressure at all other speeds and engine loads then I would guess that there is a problem with your oil getting back into your oil pan. I dont know what grade oil you are using but try going down a weight if you can. Also running some type of oil treatment that will desludge your engine's insides.

Vehicle speed is irrelevant, except in the case where vehicle speed negatively impacts airflow through the radiator, causing the engine to run hot, thinning out the oil. I've had a couple vehicles that did this: '92 Ford Ranger (automatic) and '87 Isuzu P'up (manual). Couldn't take them over 70mph for more than about 10 minutes or so - I could watch the temp gauge climbing.
It's engine rpm that determines oil pump output.
In your driveway with engine at operating temp, slowly rev the engine to slightly higher than the rpm that is indicated on your tach when you're doing 75mph, and see if the same thing happens to oil pressure indicator.

Any chance this started AFTER the last oil/filter change. If so I bet it's a calasped filter element. Fram filters are good for this one. also there very good at the relief valve distorting and allowing oil to dump back into the pan without reaching the pressure sender not to mention the engine itself. Fram filters are built with a lot of cardboard in them. Doesn't need to be a fram for this to happen. They manufacture there filters with other names attached too.

ask around (here in ATL pepboys offers it) for a shop that does an engine flush. They hook up a machine that pumps a warm cleaning solution into the filter port and vacuum it out the pan. Cleaned alot of sludge out of my old 95 dakota. restored gas milage.
