It took almost 40 years and a 1.4 million dollar supercar to finally beat the Dodge/Plymoth in the fastest quarter mile time for a prouction vehicle. What gives? I guess they just don't make them like they used to. The Cuda/Dart probably costed less than 10 grand off the dealer floor.

Yeah, also look at the HP ratings.... 1001 horsepower to 525 horsepower. That means that it took 476 extra horsepower and so much extra aerodynamics and technology to beat the Chrysler. That is sad.

The 426 Race Hemi was grossly overrated. It was easily in the 600 hp range..maybe closer to 700 in a 3000lb car.

You mean underrated? Overrated would be like the new 5.4 Tritons in the F-150s. 300hp my a$$.

underrated.
those 5.4L tritons are gutless compared to the 5.9L magnum. the 5.9L would outpull the triton any day and the triton is rated for so much more. ford is crap.

Those were some very quick cars in a straight line. But while putting a motor in a lighter car will make usually make it quicker, it doesn't raise the horsepower... ;-)

i saw recently , well, in the 90s, they dynoed a STOCK 69 426 hemi that was factory spec (they tore it down and checked it over) and a new viper
the viper put down 415 hp to the wheels or so and the hemi put down like 398 to the wheels
but then again, those werent race hemis
some people claim some of the muscle cars of the 60s and early 70s were actually in the 600-800 hp range. I think they are just full of crap because if that were the case how come people with old built up cars are getting 500-600 hp on the dyno
they had a build off on engine masters or master of engines or something like that
440 vs 454 vs 460
the 440 came in with the top HP with like 740
and they dumped TONS of parts and labor into them
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars
