Subject: Driveshaft U-joints (2wd) IP: Logged
Message: Have a 2002 Ext. Cab 2wd. I recently replaced the driveshaft u-joints on my other rig and it was a pretty simple job. But in looking under my Dakota, it seems the driveshaft has 3 u-joints.
First question: how do you remove the driveshaft? I see a flange at the rear end that would simply unbolt, then there's another joint about 1/2 way up where the drive shaft runs over a cross member and through a bracket/bearing of some sort. Then another joint at the front where the shaft runs right into the tranny (nothing to unbolt). Is the shaft that runs into the tranny just a slip yoke style where it will slide out once the shaft is freed? How do you remove the shaft from the middle support?
Also...the new joints I put in my other truck are greaseable which is nice. Any tips on how to prolong the life of ours that are not greaseable?
Thanks for the info./tips!

Message: The middle piece that you are referring to should be the carrier bearing. It should just unbolt from the cross member, but if I am correct you have to have the 2 drive-shafts pressed off. Maybe somebody else could help you. I just have a one piece setup. Thanks.

Message: the driveshafts should have a slip joint at the carrier. loosen the ends ujoints and then take the carrier bearing down it should slide apart.
you may be able to find replacement joints with grease zerks if that is what you want.

Message: @clint... I did it the old easy way. Cut the coils and put blocks on the rear. It is pretty close to a 2/3 drop.
