Subject: Ignition switch problem?
IP: Logged

Message:
My 1999 5 speed Dakota now has 114,000 miles on it. Ever since I got it at 72,000 miles three years ago, the key is removable from the ignition switch at any switch position.

Anyone else had this problem? Or is it supposed to do that?

I had a 1993 Dakota for a short while ten years ago and I can almost swear that that one did this too.

I've tried newly cut keys but they do the same thing and I guess they will since they are direct copies of the original. lol

There has been only one time when the key was locked into the switch while the truck was running.

Should I be worried and replace the ignition switch or cylinder inside?

Thanks

The switch is worn, I've seen a couple of GMs like that. Shouldn't do that, but may continue to work fine other than that.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I had a 64 Buick where you could put the key in a certain position and start without the key, but it was made to do that. Newer vehicles aren't supposed to do that. As Kowalski said, replace it, unless you like it that way.

It is kind of neat. Like when I am pulling up on my house. I've got the garage door remote on the keychain. I can just pull the keys out and it is easier to hit the button on the garage remote control.

I am just wanting to make sure that I don't get stuck somewhere because it doesn't work any more.

They've got good prices for those at www.rockauto.com.

I guess I'll order one and replace it in a few weeks.

Thanks for the help people.
