while you cant "over grease" the ball joint itself, you can blow out the seal by over greasing.

When you grease any joint with a rubber boot on it you MUST pay attention. Soon as the boot starts to show any sign of expanding STOP RIGHT THERE. that one is full. As a rule, 3 or 4 more pumps will POP the seal out of its seat and that's it. The seal is ruined for good. This seat will now allow dust, mud and water to enter the joint which converts to rust in short order.

I presume greasing every 5,000 miles might be too much?
I learned to grease on my Korean War vintage M-38-A1 , meaning it was a military Jeep.
It had 3 Zerks per spring, 3 per driveshaft and thousands of steering fittings. As I recall, felt was the seal of choice.

i grease every oil change. with my jeep i spend aobut 50% offroad in the mud and water so i grease it about once a week. when its runnin lol.

I've wondered, since the 1960's, when I first learned about permanently sealed ball joints, why we still have zerk fittings in places like the steering ball joints.
Don't know about now, but my 98 Dakota, and the Sonoma before it, have nipples, tucked away at the end of the steering rods.

lol, my ball joints are permantly sealed, although i have them in ball sack. I like it when shatto sucks on my zerk and i lubricate him. he likes my monkey nuts with amsoil lube.
