Subject: Hitch question IP: Logged
Message: considering buying hitch for 03 4.7 4wd. For those who have one, any issues with installing it yourself? Would you recommend an installer like UHAUL or someone. Has anyone been able to tow a wood chipper or a towable lift with the 4.7? Thank you for any replies.

Message: doing it yourself is more cost effective. I installed a curt hitch on my old 95 dakota 3.9. My current dakota is 02 QC 4x4 4.7 with factory mopar hitch (class IV = 10,000 lb). how much does a woods chipper or towable lift weight?
Check out TSC (tractor supply) they used to offer installation of hitches you bought from them for $25.
the pros of having someone install it is liability reasons.

Message: Check out the bone yard for a factory hitch. If you remove it yourself, you'll know how it goes back on.

Message: I bought the Mopar one, direct bolt in - can't get much simpler. Add the plug in harness and you're done!

Message: jjj and Dan M are 100% correct, gretch.
For what you're going to tow I would even guess
the Dakota's bumper system would even work.
If you're later planning to tow a much larger
unit like a camper, look into a tranny add on
cooler and brake controller.

Message: I bought the Class 3 hitch from U-Haul and installed it myself. 4 bolts are not hard to install! Use a torque wrench. I found U-Haul had the best cash and carry price. The one I bought was made by Draw-Tite.
Last week coming back from camping the county scales showed the truck at 6000# and the trailer at 4200# with the WD hitch. No problem!
'03 QC 4x4 4.7 and stick shift!
What's a "towable lift"?

Message: 6000?
My 01 QC Dak, SLT, Leer cab high shell, V8, 2 wd
only weighed 4340#'s.
Why would your weigh so much more? With me it weighed 4500#'s.

Message: s.s., the towable lift is a spider lift I've used for tree work from a rental company. Just sucks that every time I need it or a chipper, they gotta tow it for me.

Message: Gretch try etrailer.com Ive used these guys many times and they seem to have the best prices. You can get the hitch and the wiring harness for your truck for under 200 and it only costs .99 to for shipping. The hitch is good for 5000 pounds 7500 with wd and there is no drilling so it take mabye 30 minutes to install. Whatever you do please dont pull with a bumper. As a volunteer firefighter I couldnt tell you how many times Ive seen a trailer pull a bumper off and cause accidents. Hope this helps.

Message: My 02 QC 4x4 is fat too.
50 lbs skid plates
150 lbs leer shell
250 lbs tool box and tools
add in 2-4 people and that can easily add up to over another 1,000 lbs.
base 4484 + 400 = 4934 + 1000 = I'm glad I bought the V8 :D

Message: I bought a dealer hitch for my 98 but found it to only be a class III. So I bought one from JC Whitney class IV, was a Reese but I still used the factory bought wire harness as it was easy to instal. Total time was about an hour.

Message: Texas Todd, WD means weight distrubuting. So some of the Travel Trailer tongue weight is applied to the front axle and some on the rear. With 4 in the truck, canopy, leftover firewoood and bikes, the weight of the hitch, and what the hitch applies up front, yup, that's what it weighs.
Recall, I have a 4x4 QC. They are at least 4500# dry!
