Subject: 4x4 Steering Box Free Play IP: Logged
Message: Well ive owned this truck for about 4 months now its a 1997 v6 5 speed 4x4 and ive fixed alot of the things that were wrong with it but one still has me puzzled. Im getting about 1 1/2 inchs of free play in the steering wheel and its all coming from the steering box. I know this for a fact, but ive always learned that steering boxs usually last for the life of the truck. and this thing doesnt even have 80,000 miles on it yet. So is there a common problem with this box's? and if so does anyone know a fix. Its a handful on the highway. Or should i just break down and rebuild the intire box or just replace it? if so anyone know the price of one of these boxs?

Message: Turn your steering wheel all the way left and see if there is play. Then turn right and do the same. If the play is the same as going straight or very near the same, your steering is adjustable. If there is no play when turned either way then your gears are wore in the straight forward driving area and need replacing. your repair manual has all the info you need. Don,t try to adjust the gears if the test indicates your straight forward steering area is worn or you will have the hardest turning truck you ever owned.

Message: some 4X4's have had a lot of use off road. Have you checked your steering linkage to make sure the nut holding the pieces together are not loose? Some cars have had loose fittings that were not properly tightened. Have any bolts mounting the steering box sheared? I had one shear while crossing a rocky stream making steering almost useless. So that kind of stuff can happen leaving the box loose.

Message: my steering wheel has a bit of play in it to. it's not the steering box but rather the u-joint between the half-shaft and lower-steering shaft is worn out. you more than likely have the replace the lower steering shaft. if you can do it yourself, dealer quoted me $500 w/ labor. it's an easy enough fix to do yourself if you have any mechanical skills.
