Message: What year is the truck? Do the dome lights, cig lighter, horn still work? Check all the fuses, at both the fuse block in the truck and the power distribution center under the hood. There might be a low amperage fuse, maybe a 10amp for the radio memeory circuit. If it's an older truck the radio memory and the dome light and/or lighter may be all on the same fuse.
This sounds like it popped the fuse for the radio memory circuit. It's not uncommon to blow the memory fuse or damage the power cicuits in the ardio when power is disconnected and then restored. The same is true for amplifiers.
If the fuses all check OK, remove the radio and verify voltage on switched accessory 12volts and constant 12volts for the memory lead. If you have power on both these right at the radio connector, there is internal damage to the radio. A good car audio shop will be able to fix it, but it might be cheaper to just go aftermarket. If no voltage is present there has to be a blown fuse somewhere. Or if it's a newer truck with a Central Timer Module, that might be the problem.
Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out.

Message: I see in your name that your Dak is a Gen 1. Not sure if the Gen 1 had a power distribution center under the hood. I don't think they did.
The Gen 1 had radio memory circuits and dome lamp/cig lighter circuits all on the same fuse. You won't have a CTM. If you have to remove the radio and check for power there, you will have a gray plug and a black plug behind the radio. Your power wires are in the gray plug. If I remember right, memory constant 12 volts was a pink or maybe red wire and the accessory was solid red or red with a white stripe. Anyway, these wires will be right next to each other at one end of the gray plug. I think it was on the left side of the plug as you look at it in the dash, but it's been a long time and my own memory may be failing a little here.
Good luck with it.

Message: From your profile, you have what we call gen 3; and you should be able to change that in your profile. Might just need to be reset because you lost the memory when the battery was disconnected ? Have you tried tuning it manually ?

Message: Since the fuses all checked out OK, you can remove the radio and check to be sure there is voltage at the accessory and constant 12volt wires behind the radio. My Haynes book says the accessory 12volt wire in your truck is red with a white stripe and the constant 12volts wire is pink. Use a voltmeter or test light to verify there is power at the radio. If there is no power at these connections, you have blown a fuse or possibly there is damage to the Central Timer Module. It's in your driver's kick panel. If it has a problem I would say take the truck to the dealer for a diagnosis. You need the Chrysler DRB2 scan tool to check the CTM functions. I know it controls a lot of accessory functions like the interior lights and wipers and it controls voltage to accessories. It might be the cause of the problem. Here is a link if you want to know more about the CTM:
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/gen/17832.html
You also want to verify the radio has a good ground. On the back of the radio there is a spade terminal built into the case of the radio with a black wire on it. That is the ground for the radio. If you have accessory and constant voltage going in the radio you can try using a piece of wire connected to a good metal ground in the dash and connecting it to the gound terminal on the radio case. If the radio still doesn't work, there is definitely an internal problem with the radio. If that is the case, you can take the radio to a good car audio shop that can repair it. Having your radio bench-tested at a radio repair shop will tell you for sure is the radio is bad or there is a problem in the truck. If you decide to get it repaired, at least you can save yourself the charges for removal and reinstallation of the radio. Or it might be less expensive to just go with an aftermarket radio.
I have a 2001 Dakota also, but I installed an aftermarket system in it the first week I had it. There are no anti-theft security code functions on Chrysler-Dodge radios.
Good luck with it. Let us know how it turns out.
