Subject: Storing my Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 Dakota 5.2 L V8 and I will be leaving for college
upstate. I won't be taking my truck with me and It will probably be
sitting for weeks or months at a time. I'm going to buy a car cover
and all that stuff, but what should I do otherwise? It will be sitting
on the side of my house and I heard something about filling the
engine with oil completely or something like that. Any good ideas?

Message: Depends on how much you want to do. This is what I do for storing my firebird every winter
Put a bottle of marvel mystery oil in your last tank of gas. Change your brake fluid. (Any condensation in your brake lines or calipers can destroy them). A good coat of wax is good. Flush your cooling system if you feel like it. Pull the battery and get a battery tender to keep a little charge on it. Some people put a little oil in their spark plug holes but ive never done it.

Message: You definetly want to have some sort of fuel stabilizer in your tank when you store an extended period. I've not used Marvel Mystery oil, so I'm not certain if that stabilizes the fuel or is just a fuel system protectant, but there are several good fuel stabilizers on the market. I like my last run of the engine to last a good 25 or 30 minutes minimum so the engine can get to full operating temperature and cook any moisture in the engine out.

Message: A friend of mine used to "pickle" his engine before he left for 6 months at a time. And to "pickle" his engine he would fill the block up full with diesel fuel to the point even the cylinders were full. The only thing he had to do when he got back was to drain the fuel ...pull the plugs and blow out the cylinders reinstall new plugs and refill with oil ..... the engine ran like a champ .....

Message: Hmmm. okay. I guess I could try some of that. the whole diesel
fuel thing is kinda too much for me. I won't be gone TOO long
anyways. I'm still gunna take some precautions and stuff. Probably
the gas thing and the brake fluid.

Message: All the above replys are great ideas and I do
a lot of them myself when I store my Dakota
during the summer months to drive my old AMC.
Something not to forget about is the MICE that
will look at the new housing. What I do to fight
that BIG problem if you do nothing is, I put
math balls around all the wheels. It seems to do
the trick! Believe me Ky_man, I learned the hard
way.

Message: Haha, thanks for the tip, and where I'm storing it is at the side of
my house too, lol. There were mice there once, so at least you
reminded me! lol.
