IP: Logged

Message:
Help!! i replaced my rear speed sensor because i was showing all the symptoms(abs, brake light, etc..) after putting it in and reconnecting the battery, the truck does a bunch of rapid clicking and i can hear a slow click in the rear and the truck won't start. ANY HELP?!?!? I cleaned of the old sensor and re-installed it and the truck starts but won't stay running...i have no clue!!!!

Unplug the sensor connector and try starting it again. New sensor could be defective.

Tried that before i put the old one in. the truck sat for the past night and all the next day. After some heavy throttle i managed to keep it running and idling with the old sensor in. Might try driving it a bit then swaping the sensors and clean the battery terminals. are these the symptoms of a deffective replacement sensor?

Message:
The not running and having to use throttle to keep running is a common symptom of a weak battery not putting out full voltage which in turn affects the computer and idle. That's a 1st place to look. Cleaning the terminals like you suggested will be 1st step.

well, cleaning the battery helped. The truck starts with the new sensor in, but now i am back to square one because the ABS and brake lights are back on and i can still feel the brakes pump when i use them around slow turns(braking and turning a corner or pulling into a parking spot)

RE: ABS and BRAKE light on -- everyone with the abs and brake light on, and some with no low range speedo as well has changed their rear abs speed sensor. the one in the rear diff

Message:
just did rear abs sensor - problem solved, some hints for a 99 dak
- day before spray nut with wd40 or liquid wrench
- drive rear wheels up ramps (or steep driveway, helps keep diff fluid from leaking out, also chock wheels!)
- disconnect neg battery teminal
- top nut 13 MM use box wrench
- bottom nut 14 MM use box wrench
- press connector with thumb and pull connector off sensor
- wiggle sensor up, put screw driver under lip and wiggle to raise (carefully)
- dip finger in hole and put diff oil on new O ring on sensor
- push sensor in and bolt up (also, use dielectric grease for the wire connector)
- put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds
- reconnect battery
you're done

Note: Check the wrench sizes, I've seen that some people use 1/2" and 9/16" (which are close to 13mm and 14mm). Not sure if the nuts are metric or not.

Actually, the START position seems to work best.

What this does, J-Rod, is reset the PCM for you.

So here is what i have done since changing the speed sensor. I followed the wiring from the sensor to the front of the vehicle. I found a spot where it looked like the wires were getting pinched(from body lift) so i freed them up. then i looked at any and all wiring that looked like it may have some relation to the front brakes or the wires from the rear speed sensor. Straightened out any fishy looking bends especially at connection points. Some wiring or tubing going to the front tires was not clipped well on one wheel so i zip-tied it down to match the opposite wheel. I then did the 30 second start position thing. This time, when i finished and started the truck up, the ABS and brake were already lit up(never were on at start-up before). I drove about 2 blocks and the lights went out, then i continued driving and tried to recreate the sitiations that caused the ABS to kick in when slow turning. couldn't get it to kick on at all(which is a good thing!) So from this point all is well and i don't exactly know what the final cure was but thank you everyone for all the help. Hopefully today my problem won't pop back up.
