Subject: Stereo only works during braking

2000 4.7L CC 5-speed

I swear my stereo only puts out sound when I am braking. Let off the brake, hit the gas, or come to a complete stop with the brake pedal down, and it goes out. The CD will keep spinning, the radio will stay on, but I don't get any sound out of the speakers.

I have an aftermarket deck that I have hardwired myself to bypass the Infinity amp.

Last night I was thinking the issue was some kind of short or bad wiring, so I re-wired the whole thing. Afterwards, I sat with the key in the on position and dome light, etc on for about a half hour while I put the dash back together. After that, the stereo wouldn't even power up. I thought I had shorted out the deck or blown a fuse, but after I started the truck and let it run for a few minutes (recharging the battery?) the deck powered on just fine, but still no sound unless I drove it around and braked.

I don't think its the alternator because my battery is recharging. Maybe it's the battery, but I doubt it because it is only 2 years old and does everything (windows, starts, lights) like a champ.

This is so bizarre, I've looked all over the site...

This sounds like a speaker wire in the truck that is maybe just barely shorting to chassis ground, and when you use the brakes, the inertia of the truck stopping is enough to move the shorted wire away from whatever metal it is contacting. Remove your new radio and use an ohmmeter or volt meter set to continuity to ground and verify none of the speaker leads are shorted to ground. If you do find one shorted, it may very likely be shorted at the speaker location. Remove that speaker and insulate the metal behind the speaker connections with duct tape. You might also trace the speaker wires back and try to see if maybe one is pinched somwhere or possibly accidentally has a screw in it. If you can't find the short, just run a new speaker wire from that speaker up to the radio.

Other than that, verify you have sufficient voltage at the accessory and continous 12volt connections behind the radio, and make sure to have a good solid chassis ground for the radio. In the past, I have seen Chrysler vehicles where the factory ground strap or ground wire if it had one were not sufficient for an aftermarket radio. Aftermarket units have a lot more power than OEM units and a good clean ground with less than .2 ohms resistance is critical.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out.

Jimmy
