Subject: 180F to 195F MPG Difference? 3.9 V6 IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if anyone seen a difference in MPG when they switched out their stock 195F thermostat for a 180F? Reason im asking is when i first bought the truck i did work on the motor and put in a 180F thermo and had never ran a 195F. Now with summer coming fuel is going to go up even more and im always looking for some better MPG and the truck is a 3.9L V6 5speed 4x4

Message: with the 180 your engine doesnt reach operating tempature. it always runs open loop. mine was a gas pig. if its hot out, supposedly it will get better mpg but im not gonna try it again.

Message: Actually, If the 180 showed a fuel increase the truck would have one from factory. They battle the fuel problem every year with federal compliance changes. I've yet to see a good reason to run a 180. You lose fuel millage and heater efficiency for sure. The 195 heats the internal engine parts to a higher degree which is best for keeping contaminates under control. This is Really important for trucks doing short runs to work or store. Those first few miles are your biggest engine killer.

Message: Well i switched out the 180F thermo for a 195 today. Took like 5 mins anyway ive only drove the truck alittle bit but there doesnt seem to be any noticeable power decrease and the truck idles so much smoother now. It should be a few days before i know if the MPG goes up but hopefully. Plus i have heat coming out of the heater vents again haha

Message: On a basically stock engine, a 185* thermostat seems to be a mixed bag. That temp is too low for the stock programming for a lot of people. The computer still runs in warm up mode, and it's too rich. Poor idle, and poor gas mileage are the result.
However, some people have made the switch and experianced none of that. Go figure.
Of course, the real question is, do you get a power increase with the lower stat? I think the answer is "No". But nobody has actually tested it to find out.
