 Subject: Transmission issues in '92 Ram 150

Hi everyone. I know it isn't exactly Dakota related, but I have a '93 Dakota, and my brother has the '92 Ram. The trans setups seem pretty similar, so any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Heres the issue.
The Ram is a RC 4X4 automatic with a 5.2 in it. It has around 125k miles on it. The problem is that when I put it in drive and take off, it take til around 30mph to shift from 1st to 2nd. Then it take til almost 60mph to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Then, it grabs 4th and overdrive almost immediately thereafter. We just did a fluid and filter change to see if that would help, but it really didn't. A friend of mine recommended putting some Lucus brand trans additive into it that is supposed to help slipping and sticking problems. After adding that, it did seem to shift a tad earlier than before, but it still seems a bit early to me. The one intersting thing to me seem that if I hit the gas and take it up to around 15mph and let off, it seems to shift into 2nd. I know this because I then manually shift it into 1st, and it downshifts. So, it does shift, but when there is no throttle applied. As soon as I add throttle to it again though, it seems to go right back down to 1st and takes til 20-25 mph to shift into 2nd.
I figured maybe someone on here could help me put since looking at my '93 Dakota and my brothers '92 Ram, the trans setups seem similar.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did try the cable adjustment I think. There is a cable that goes down from the back of the throttle to the transmission. I followed the procedure in my Haynes manual for my dakota, and it seemed to be adjusted properly. I did a test were I did the opposite of what the manual said and I was able to make the truck shift later, so when it is adjusted properly, it shifts earlier, but not early enough. I didn't think about any vacuum leak though, I will have to look into that.

If you find no vacuum leaks I would be looking real close at the cable. It may be stretched or frayed at some point. On my 99 4X4 5.2 CC, I can not set it by the book. It just gets it in the general area. At that point I make very small adjustments at a time and drive it. Took several tries before I got it to shift like I wanted it to.
You never mentioned if it has been messed up for a long or short time. This can/will make a difference to what is causing it.

Well, thats the thing. My brother bought it about 2.5 years ago, and I don't recall if it shifted like that when we test drove it or not. It probably did though. Since he bought it, I have been the one who put the most miles on it. At one point 2 summers ago, my Dakota wouldn't start and I needed to get to work, so I drove his truck. It was shifting like that the entire time I drove it. We have probably barely put 200 miles on it since purchasing it. So, I don't know how long it has really been like this. Some younger kid had it before and sold it to another guy, who sold it to us.
