Subject: top end tap IP: Logged
Message: about 2 years ago i ran 5w30 synthetic through my engine. i noticed decreased power, bad gas mileage, and the truck would get hot when pushed hard. After about 1500 miles on the oil, I noticed a slight tapping sound comming from somewhere. I immediatly changed out the oil back to 10w30 synthetic. Ever since then, ive had this top end tap. It seems like its comming from a lifter or something. The tapping sound went away for about a month or 2, approximately 6 months ago. After that it came back, and ive noticed recently its getting a little louder on startup. After about 5 minutes i still notice it but its not nearly as loud.
What should I do? Should I leave it alone and just run it? or should I pull the top end off. COULD IT BE A STICKY VALVE? If it is a sticky valve what should i do? Do the valves need adjustment?

Message: I know this is a temporary fix, but you could run some heavier oil in the motor....something like 10W40 or even a 20 weight.
That will not fix the underlying problem, but the sound will be a little less noticeable if you decide to trade it in.
