 Subject: Black margin around windshields?

All new autos have a black margin around the windshields now days. Some areas it is checkered. What the heck is it for? If it is for shading, why is it even across the bottom?

On some vehicles it is a de-icer grid so that your wipers don't get stuck in the ice during a cold icy morning.
