Subject: Pulley Noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a '98 with the 3.9L v6. I noticed a squealing noise a few days ago and thought it was the fan belt. So I replaced the belt and it still makes the noise. My manager at work said he's gone through 4 fan belts on his Dak and it still makes the noise, as well as a guy my dad works with. It sounds like it must be fairly common. Any ideas on what it could be?

Message: It could be one of two things
A: a pulley is gone somewhere ie alt, powersteering, idler, air cond, etc
B: and most likely belt tensioner the pulley is either gone or the tensioner has gotten weak and lets the belt slip alittle causing the noise.
U could always get belt dressing and spray the belt. Just makes it so its softer so it glides over the pullies better. It cheap stuff

Message: i don't recommend using belt dressing. it's not a solution.
if the belt is in good condition then
check alignment of all the pulleys visually. they should all be inline. next remove the belt and give the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley each a good spin. if the bearings are bad in either one it will feel rough while youer turning it. also, when you give those a spin check for side to side play.
