What is an easy way to check your ball joints? I don't want to pay a garage since its under warranty but all the dealers around me our SOBs and have tried to pass stuff off before.

Well if you take it to the dealer they will say
that you haev to have ti supported on both sides
evenly and the check the ball joints by putting a
dial indicator on the top of the ball joint. They
tell me on the 2000's that there should be .060"
of play. But i disagree on this. If you support
one side of the truck by a floor jack i have found
my ball joints to be out a lot more than that but
the dealers insist that there is nothing wrong
with the either one. I might end up doing the job
myself down the road. Good luck finding someone
that will check them properly!!!!

I know this has been discussed before but those of you who have replaced your ball joints with NON OEM equipment (Moog or other), where did you get the parts? I've found the lower ball joints from Moog on carparts.com but haven't found the upper ball joints. Does anyone make them? Do you have to buy the upper 'A' arms as a whole or can you remove the old ball joint and press/bolt in a new one? Any info would be appreciated.

I recently replaced the upper pass side ball joint with a nice replacement from carquest. I believe it was them, I remember that it was a silver box with red and blue stripes at the top. Anyway, it came with the zert and three bolts to replace the rivets that came from the factory. The part was something like $40, maybe even 60, I really can't remember. The dealer wanted 400 for the part and the A-arm as a kit. But I liked the ability to grease the joints, so I may wind up replacing the dirver's side as well soon.

I recently replaced my right uper ball joint, I got it at high/lo O'Rielys, i thik it was like $40 or $50, and it was a moog. You can grease these also, but if you do the work yourself you have to drill off the rivits. It took me about a hr and a half.

Does anyone have pictures of the step by step procedure on removing and replacing the ball joints(upper and lower)? I am not very mechanically inclined and don't want to pay $500 for a shop to do it for me. I would appreciate anything you guys could email me. Thanks.

I did both upper and lower ball joints on my truck. The lowers I bought from another R/T guy who was selling them since he replaced his control arms and didn't need the new ball joint, and the upper I bought at Napa. On the lower ball joints, you will probably have to drill out the rivits, then just use the supplied bolts to put the new ones on. On the upper ball joint, I used an angle grinder and ground off the tops of the rivits, then just used a hammer to pound off the ball joints. worked much easier and faster than trying to drill out all the rivits. The supplied bolts for the upper ball joints are smaller than the holes in the control arm so you might want to buy larger bolts and drill out the holes in the ball joints. When I bought mie I had to ask for ball joints for a '97 2wd Dakota to get any to show on thier computers.

http://www.autoparts-site.com Best prices, and the bolts for the uppers are to small you will need grade( 8 ) 3/8" diameter to correct this, and drill holes in uppers to 3/8".
