Subject: Recommended maintenance for '99 IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, this is my first time to this board. It looks like a good collection of knowledgeable Dakota owners.
I’ve got a ’99 5.2L V8 with 70,000 miles. I bought it about a year and a half ago at 52K miles. I’ve been doing the routine maintenance; oil change every 3 months, occasional fuel-additive in a tank of gas, cleaning my K&N air filter.
Is there any recommended maintenance that should be done to a Dakota at this point? New spark plugs, timing belt, fluid flushes, shocks, etc? I want to cover any crucial items, and ignore the 5 page list of recommended procedures I get from my local employee at Jiffy-Lube. Thanks for any feedback.

Message: I would lube the ball joints and steering linkage each time you change oil. Dakota ball joints and steering linkages leave a little to be desired and keeping them well lubed is very advisable. I would also reccomend that you change the diff fluid. When you refill it, use a quality synthetic lubricant for best results. I won't reccomend a brand name to use since all that does is create flames on the board. Any brand is fine!

Message: Great, thanks Rusty. Sounds like those are all items I could do myself? Probably with a little help from the Haynes book dah brought up.

Message: Its all very simple stuff, very few tools required etc. A Haynes book or other brands of books will give you a lot of tips etc - should be all you need.

Message: I would just completely replace the ball-joints and tire-rods. The original ones are junk. Get some Moogs. Just watch out, I have got a couple of the ball-joints from them that have torn boots.
'97 RC V6, 5spd, soon to be V8, 5spd!
