Hey, what is the best fluid to use in an RE44? This tranny is new with a new convertor. Book says ATF+3. Can other fluid be used? I heard ATF+4 can be and is better.
Thanks

Last time I bought fluid they didn't even have ATF +3, they only carried +4

I heard some people had problems with the synthetic stuff.
Also heard that ATF+4 can be used with requiring less than +4 also.
I may play it safe and go with the Mopar AFT+4. It's $30/gallon so there's $100 worth of fluid.
Thanks for your input guys.

ATF +3 has gone the way of the Dodo. +4 has replaced it.
Go to the local Wally World and get the Valvoline +4, that's what the MoPar stuff is.

ATF+3, ATF+4 or AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF?

Since 1999, Chrysler has recommended a unique ATF+4 formulation. In addition, Chrysler has been recommending ATF+4 for ALL previous makes and models of Chrysler Corporation vehicles (backwards compatable).

Please consider AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF

Prices: Amsoil Preferred Customer Pricing

(1) Quart ...................... $ 6.85
(1) Case (12 quarts) .... $ 78.00

(1) 2.5 gallon bottle ..... $ 64.35
(2) 2.5 gallon bottles ... $122.50

AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF provides outstanding high and low temperature performance and oxidation stability. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF also improves fuel efficiency, reduces transmission temperatures and increases equipment life. The service life of the universal AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is up to five times the service life of conventional ATFs.

AMSOIL Synthetic Universal ATF exceeds the performance specifications for Chrysler ATF+, +2, +3, and +4 as well as MS-7176 A, B, C, D, & E; MS-9602 A, B, & C. as well as Ford Mercon or General Motors Dexron III applications. AMSOIL Synthetic ATF is available in quarts, quart cases, twin packs, 30-gallon and 55-gallon drums.

Please contact me via email for more information.

You'd believe a Diesel guy!?

* The fastest way to verify is for everybody reading this to call a dealer and ask.
If you are told Amsoil, or any lubricant meeting specifications but not personally recommended by them, voids the factory warranty, get that persons name and report back to Steve and me.

* Fact: Amsoil has a 100% Warranty.
If it meets or exceeds the factory specifications (that is what the alphabet soup of letters on the container is about) and is used in the proper application, Amsoil stands behind their product fully.

* An aside; I had to replace the factory differential. It became so noisy people in closed cars on the freeway could hear me coming. I had always used Amsoil in it.
Question: Did it fail in spite of Amsoil, or did I get an extra 150,000 miles out of it because of Amsoil?

do you think their backing us in any way shape or form???????

bottom line
amsoil is half the product they claim it to be!
and this steves claims on the amsoil motor oil

make the very same claims!!!!!

screw that,

* Transmissions don't 'blow-up' unless they have a design flaw or are used in extreme situations. Dragsters 'blow-up' running gear.
* Transmission failure can be caused by improper re-assembly, as improperly rebuilt. Yours?
* ANY dealer who says he won't honor the warranty, when Amsoil was properly used, is breaking the law as well as telling a lie. Ditto, Amsoil.

Ergo; Prove your claim.

Consumer reporters and some DA's drool at the chance to destroy an evil capitalist, screw the little guy, money grubbing company, so, go get em.
If you sound like a victim, like here, I'm sure they will want to help you.

How can we trust the comments of anyone who posts anonymously and without any proof to back it up.

Diesel Transmissions "blowing up" becase they switched to Amsoil ?!?!?

I don't think so !!!!!

My brother is a diesel mechanic and has changed many Dodge diesels (engines and transmissions) to Amsoil without any problems. He also owns a Dodge diesel (Amsoil from front to rear). He has also been an Amsoil Dealer for 20 years.

Warranty Issues ?!?!?

Some Dodge Dealerships now carry Amsoil products.
If there were any warranty issues they would not.

Next.

Well,

What type of proof would you like Steve?

I ran Amsoil Universal ATF in my 2003 Dak 545RFE and the tranny puked (needle bearings in a planetary wore out) at 89K miles, 49K miles with Amsoil ATF. BlackStone Labs (an independent lab) said the ATF was oxidized and over run. While Amsoil's analysis company, Oil Analyzers, said everything was A OK and the fluid was still in good condition, minimal oxidation. Amsoil denied the warranty claim.

Was it worth my time to pursue the warranty claim further? NO

Will I be following Amsoil's extended drain intervals in the future? NO

Is it better to run Amsoil Universal ATF to 50K miles than running Mopar ATF+4 30K miles? Not from my experience.

Will I be using Amsoil's products in the future? Probably not...

Amsoil "might" be a better fluid, but I'm not doing extended drain intervals anymore. It's one heck of a lot cheaper to replace the fluids at the manufacturers recommended intervals, than to replace a blown engine or transmission.

And for those of you thinking, the dealer will never know I put Amsoil in the engine or transmission. Oil analysis companies can tell if it's the manufacturer's recommended fluid, the additive packages are different. Boron? There's a bunch in ATF+4, but minimal amounts in Amsoil Universal ATF. I noticed BlackStone has a program for dealers to send in samples, probably to verify that the proper fluid was used.

DSW,

I've watched you post here for many years and believe you to be a trustworthy individual. Sorry to hear your story and let me be the first to say that if you (or anyone else) have any issues or questions (including warranty issues), always let me know via email and they will be addressed to the best of my ability.

SERVICE LIFE of Amsoil Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

The SERVICE LIFE of Amsoil Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), is recommended for use up to 50,000 miles under severe service* and up to 100,000 miles under normal service**

* severe service (per the various automotive manufacturers associations)
is anything that is not highway miles (sad but true, go figure)
** normal service (non-severe) is considered highway miles
where you have stable operating conditions

I know what you are going to state, and I already agree with you. Who drives only highway miles? But don't question us ... question the various automotive manufacturers associations who make the rules.
_____

I use Amsoil Synthetic Universal ATF for my own vehicles. I take the fluids to a local garage. They use the fluids that I provide and charge me a "nominal" service fee for the labor. I do the same with my motor oil. I drive a combination of city and highway miles (I live in NYC). My driving would be considered VERY VERY severe service (lot's of stop-and-go in the city), so I change mine every 35k miles.

For me, is it better to run Amsoil Universal ATF to 35K miles than running the OEM fluid 25K miles?

Honestly ... I believe so.

Ask any NYC TAXI driver how tough NYC is on engines and transmissions. I have lived in NYC for 20 years and NEVER had an engine or transmission problem using Amsoil. (DISCLAIMER: I am not a NYC Taxi Driver).

Thank you, and remember to send an email if you need assistance.

Regards,

Steven
