Message: As an example, my 2004 Ram 1500 (4.7, 5sp, 2WD)
mention a 2000lbs maximum trailer load, more than that and the optional 'trailer towing prep package' is required.
Depends how far you need to tow,
driving slowly a few miles down the street to the lake is reasonable,
but 65 MPH on the highway or in a hilly region
might not be a good idea.
Your question shoud be "can I pull my trailer -SAFELY- for you and the other drivers around you.

One tight turn, hard accel, or hard brake and your not gonna be a happy boater. Its easier to just get the tow package now than to get a tow package and a bumper later.

Message: Ok, so I over estimated on the weight of the boat. I talked to my friend who owns the boat and he said that it weights about 1800 lbs, its a 12 1/2 ft fiberglass bass boat. It will need to be pulled a lil over 100 miles. I think I will be ok getting it to the lake and back, my bumper says that it is good for 2000lbs. What about pulling it out of the water will this cause too much stress on the bumper? I don't plan on doing much towing with the truck and will soon be getting a roll pan so I would rather not spend the money for a hitch if I can avoid it.
Thanks for the help

Message: play it safe and get a receiver hitch. you can get a 3,000# for around 100 bucks. i wouldn't pull a radio flyer wagon with the stock bumper.

Message: Agreed. Truck will pull it easily. Bumper hitch, not so much. Get a receiver and you'll have no worries.

Message: I pulled right under 2000lbs with a 1990 ranger reg. cab 4x4 with 2.9l and a manual. I used the bumper hitch...it worked, but I only went about 20 miles. There is also the fact the tongue height will likely be off, and there is no way to adust that with a bumper hitch. It really comes down to: Are you the kind of person that rents the rental car with the extra coverage or keep the $15 bucks and let it ride? Your answer to that will be your answer to this.

Message: Like they said, it's not a matter of the truck pulling it, but the bumper. I have a 1998 rc v6 5spd and towed my friends '86 rx7 with no problems, but I did hook it up to my towing package. If I didn't have the towing package, my buddies car would still be on the side of the road.

Message: Don't even think about it!! Here is my story--I was towing my first boat and trailer about 2,200 pounds with the step bumper and ball on my 95 Dakota. I was going about 50 mph and had the left trailer tire blow--the trailer went hard to the left and jack knifed. Some how I got the truck and boat stopped. When I got out to look at the back of the truck, the two bolts holding the bumper on the left side had snapped, bumper was at a 90 degree angle and bent and I needed a new tailgate. It was a relief that I didn't kill anyone, let alone myself. I will never tow anything without a frame mounted receiver. In my 25 years of boating, I have seen three step bumpers come off the trucks as they tried to pull a boat out of the water. I just bought a nice Hidden Hitch Receiver from ontheball.com for $109 bucks plus shipping for my new 2006 Dakota. It was about a 1 beer job to install. Buy the hitch. Best of luck Fishful Thinking (boat's name)
