Subject: Well got my engine problem fixed IP: Logged
Message: Thank God!!!!!
It only cost me 77 dollars and I thought my engine was already worn out. As it turns out it I had some bad plug wires and a vacume hose that was broke in half. Also its got a new cap&rotor.
Now the truck with "231,000!" miles on it runs almost like new!!
Just more proof a 318 is on of the best engines ever made!

I think the 318 has been around since the early 60's not 50's.

Message: The "A" block 318 was released in 1957 and ran til 1967. It was known as the 318 "poly" for the polyspherical combustion chamber (also called semi-hemi). A very similar setup is used on the recent 4.7 liter engine. The LA was derived from the A design, and changed, not unlike the way the LA was changed to the Magnum. The "LA" 318 (same bore and stroke) picked up in '67 where the poly left off. So, depending on how you look at it, the 318 really has been around since 1957.

Message: I think that would be a rather jaded view - there is MUCH more difference between the Poly 318 and the LA, then there is between the LA and magnum. A magnum is pretty much an LA with better heads; whereas the poly 318 is really a completely different engine. No parts interchange. The LA 318 can only be traced back to the '60's, coming about as a displacement increase from the LA 273. And they can be killed, I killed one back in the '70's.

Message: I wasn't implying the poly to LA was a simple evolution (the "A" block is slightly larger and heavier than the "LA" block), rather the same basic bore/stroke combination was a carry-over.
However, as for internals, the 273 used the poly (A) 318 crankshaft, bearings, bearing caps, vibration damper, and conecting rods. The 273 and 318 both had a 3.31" stroke. They also shared timing gears/chains. Granted, this was the early 273, which was slightly different from later 273's, which shared more commonality with the LA 318, so maybe not quite so jaded after all, and a bit more evolutionary than you thought.

Message: The LA series that is the precurser to todays magnums was designed in the '60's.
The LA 273 and LA 318 don't have any parts that interchange with the earlier poly motors. Completely different...

Message: You know that pretty much explains why the Magnum engines have a higher compression. Becuase of the simi Hemi combustion chamber.

| RE: Well got my engine problem fixed IP: Logged
Message: Not really. Actually, there is nothing about a semi hemi design that leads to higher compression. In fact, it can be more difficult - requiring a more complex piston design. And not all magnums have that semi hemi design - 5.2 and 5.9 magnum are wedge heads...

Message: Funny thing is - the poly lifter bores made it all the way through - ever notice how the LA pushrods are at an angle?

Message: Yes, the 318 motor is a great motor, it will still be running when your tranny takes a crap, your wheels fall off from the undersize ball joints ( my 1996 Suzuki esteem compact car has larger ball joints than my 1999 4 X 4 Dakota ) Your ty rod ends fall off the sockets, your surpentine belt tensioner seizes, your slush bucket 42RE stops shifting and starts slipping, yes the 318 will last thru countless hubs, rotors, and calipers. Do yourself a favor and buy a toyota.

Message: And when my truck does actually does all of those things you said,
which will probably be another 214,000 miles or many more, that's
when i'll consider buying another truck. And then that will
probably be another Dodge Dakota. I think it's the same amount to
maintain an older vehicle as it is to just go out and buy a brand
new car. I'm a drive it until it truly drops kind of guy.

Message: You probably have aa earlier Dakota, I had a 1992 and it was a great truck. Get later in the 90's and beware. The front end is totaly redesigned. If you dont belive me ask your parts guy to show you a upper and lower ball joint from a 1990, then ask him to show you a 1998. The 1990 ball joint is 5 times bigger. Also the early 90's brakes were trouble free. They had a good thing going until they decided to throw quality completely out the window. I am not biased, I used to be a dodge man. I had a 1982 D100, a 1992 Dakota, 1993 ram 150, a 1998 dakota, and now a 1999 Dakota, and my dad has a 1998 Dakota, which I work on. Believe me, I have worked on plenty of Dodges.

Message: I would have never guess that My dakota had undersized balljoints!! But I don't have the same auto slush box you got. I have a more Sh!tty transmisson (46RH) that leaks about as much as a B52 bomber.
Also I got some Manaflows installed. Just love the sound!
