Subject: When to Replace Old Truck IP: Logged
Message: My grandparents used to take their annual summer vacation trip to Detroit, where they took delivery of the new DeSoto from the factory. I doubt there were many miles on any of them.
Many people replace their car around 100,000 miles, trucks a bit longer, depending on use, I suppose.
I am seriously curious what you think the proper age and mileage should be for replacement.
What do you do?

Message: Obviously there is no right answer, however when selling a vehicle, one would see there are a few times that are good to sell it, those are when there is a small amount of transferable warranty left, before or shortly after 100K miles and then again before 120K miles, these provide a better price point. It really comes down to the idea that the vehicle no longer meets what requirements you ask of it. If one requires a vehicle to be less than 2 years old, then sell after 2 years, if one needs a dependable vehicle to commute 100 miles a day in subzero temps, a hard starting vehicle might need to go. A lot has to do with how much one owes or paid originally. It is never about how much you can get for a vehicle, it is how much you paid for it.

Message: My 98 has 163,000 miles on it and is still a solid good looking truck. I have a new tranny for it but the rest is solid. No need to replace it so I won't, just the parts it needs... like ball joints every year or so.

Message: Got an 04 Quad CAb 4x4 V8 with 45rfe.
It's all in the maintenance. I'm running mobil one with changes every 5000 miles and at 50,000 miles just had a full transmission flush and pan cleaning. I put on a second high capacity cooler to keep the new fluid fresh for longer. I'll probably get the pan dropped again in another 15-20000 miles and get a flush again at 100,000. Had front and rear diff fluid replaced at 15000 miles. Planning to have the transfer case done on the next oil change.
If it were a lemon something would have gone on already so I feel safe in assuming the powertrain is now good to at least 200,000 miles. That is the most expensive stuff to worry about. Beyond that, I imagine shocks, ball joints, and other small suspension bits and pieces will be needed sooner or later.
I try to get door dings fixed as soon as possible. I touch up noticable knicks and scratches. Been rear-ended twice. Got the rear bumper repainted both times even though everybody made fun of me because it 'looked like nothing.' Why? Half the time when people go get a new car after only a few years it's because they haven't kept it looking nice and all the damage accumulates to the point where it's really just too ugly to drive anymore.
I'll glady pay for it all and hold onto this thing for 200,000 miles if I can. It's paid off as of a year ago and I've found alot of more fun things to do with my cash besides car payments.

Message: I replace DC products as soon as the tranny
begins to act up. That may be three years maybe
ten years. There are NO and I mean NO tranny
people out there that can be depended on. No such
thing, period.
I'm talking of auto trannys also.
Sorry to have to say that but it's a known fact.

I recommend you do the same.

Message: I'm a drive it 'til it drops kind of guy. Then when it does drop, get
either a used or new car, whichever you prefer, and then drive it
until it drops. That is if you like it anyways. I still have a 213,000
mile '97 5.2. I haven't had any major problems with it either.
*knocks on wood* and I believe the dakota is a very dependable
truck.

Message:
When you think about the fact people aren't buying brand spanking new cars/trucks like they used to back in the 90's (American makes) you can expect people to buy used car/truck with more miles than ever (discount auto shopping) the more miles the cheaper right? Well, I was checking out a 01 Dodge truck with 125 K miles and the dealer was asking about 8 grand for it. I'm like forget it! I just assume to buy almost new (like a 05) for just to a bit more.
So since people are sticking to there vehicles much longer than usual. You can expect to see way more miles on the OD if you like buying used.
As for me.. since don’t like the look of the Gen 44 Dakota, and even thought about buying a Chevy Colorado (imagine that?) I am going to keep my Dakota until the entire thing falls apart. That’s just my two cents.
But then again, I’m in the mood for another truck and also a car. Crown Vic doesn’t look to bad
