Subject: Battery lasted 4 yrs, think that's good? IP: Logged
Message: Well the Dakota is now 4 yrs old and bout 50k miles. The original battery died tonight at the local Lowes store and wouldn't start my truck.
It started slowly earlier today and I thought I had left something on.
Luckily there was an AutoZone in the same shopping center that was not closing for another 10 minutes! :P
The truck has the heavy duty battery, 130AMP (I think) alternator etc that came with the tow package.
I have drained the battery to nothing about 50 times from leaving a power inverter on over a weekend, etc. I even had a 6 gauge wire to the amplifiers short and start a fire once draining the battery to nothing as the wire glowed red. That was a year ago. I also have romped the truck off road.
The Grand Caravan we have is a 2004 and it's battery died last fall.
So do you think 4 years is good?

Message: One of the worst things to happen to a battery is full complete drain. In fact sometimes it will not except a charge when that dead. But most of the time if that happens hook the charger up to the dead battery and a low charged battery. That way the charger will but out juice and some will get into the dead battery giving it a starting point. Your battery has had the worst abuse possible and lived 4 years. Have it bronzed.

Message: I've seen mixed results with batteries before.
the original battery in my wife's old grand am lasted 4 years before a bad amp caused it to drain. replaced it with one and it lasted about a year before it went bad.
the original mopar battery in my old 95 dakota lasted from dec 95 (truck manufacture date) until march 2002. that included the truck being in indiana in some harsh winters until Jan 2001.

Message: Ditto, I have an '02 with HD towing pkg. Still strong after 5 years and the Minnesota 130 degree temperature swings we get.
I wonder about it sometimes, because you know it'll fail when it's -20 F out. It's become almost like seeing how low you can run your gas tank before she stalls out.

Message: My QC was built in April, 2002 - still has the factory battery. I haven't "abused" it like GraphiteDak has done to his battery. :-P
It would be great if I can get seven years out of it like DC02 got from his Ram. I really don't want to buy a $100 (or more) battery this year...

Message: 7 years? Wow.
I guess 4 years was a LONG time for one of MY batteries to last!
And as OBIO said, the drianing it has seen many of times would surely have killed many batteries.
The one I bought was the AutoZone GOLD series. It was $92
The starter is cranking really fast now. I forgot it ever cranked that fast. The battery must have been getting weak for a while yet not leaving me stranded until last night, which like I said I got lucky it happened within walking distance to AutoZone 10 min before they closed!

Message: That's some good luck Graphite. Sorry, but I have to one-up ya...LOL
I stopped at Sam's Club to have my tires rotated after being 120 miles out of town. 1/2 hour later the tire guy says my truck's dead, you gotta be sh1ttin me? Sure enough the battery gave up the ghost 10' from Sam's Club service bay. Talk about some dumb luck, $70 later I was back in business and I didn't even have to get dirty... ;-)
That was on my old 00 Dak which had a replacement Penskie battery,,, it was 1 month out of warranty, go figger?

Message: Any advice on Battery brands? Is Duralast a good choice. Just passed 50,000 on my 03 dakota. Figured time for a new battery. Wondering why I should pay more for the name (interstate, die hard, etc.) or if they are a better battery. Any advice would help.

Message: I personally haven't used Duralast, but haven't heard anybody complain about them. Interstate is a good middle-of-the-road battery, but don't expect them to last much past warranty. I've got Diehards in the wife's van and the mowers, the boat, etc. Diehard in her van has been there for 7 years (knock on wood). When the truck battery finally goes, I'll probably put a Diehard in it.

Message: I got a 1999 reg cab 2wd Dakota sport
I bought the truck brand new on Mar. 20 1999 here it is coming up on the 20th of march again and I still have the original battery!
So that would make it 8 years old in 2 weeks, pretty damn good battery if you ask me. :}
