Subject: 99 Dakota Problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello Everyone,

I have a 99 Dakota, V8, 4X4 5-speed extended cab, with 48K miles. Over this past month or so I started to notice a vibration, I'm thinking from the drive line, when I'm at a certian RPM and speed, you can feel the vibration? My first thought that it maybe just something to do with the very cold temps outside (It sits outside, no garage). Now that it's warmed up some the problem is still exists. I also noticed that the limited slip does not seem to be working like before.

What do you all think is the problem? The cluch? The limited slip? Universial Joints? Something Else? Any input would be greatful. Thanks

I have had a similar problem with my truck. it vibrated right around 110 KPH. There could be many things causing the vibration.
-The universal joints usually make more noise (grinding) before they cause a vibration. If you have noticed front end noise, then this may be the case.
-Are your tires worn out, or relatively new? if they are older, the layers could be separating in spots and causing vibration (that means new tires).
- Also, the obvious, your front end could be out of alignment..... getting an alignment is easy and usually not that expensive (unless you need parts).

Your best bet (if your tires are good) is to take it in for an alignment and they will usually tell you what parts need to be replaced on the front end, typically ball-joints and/or tie rods. I needed tie-rods, replaced them myself, and brought it back for an alignment

I have either told you things you already know, or helped you out....

Thanks P Bain !!

My tires are the orginal factory goodyears. I hope that is the problem, I was thinking it maybe time to get some new rubber.

I'll have to wait, just the other day my original battery gave out after 7 years. So I need to pick up a new one.

I had a bad problem with my truck shaking at 50-65 MPH and realized it was a tire out of balance. Took it to my local 4 Wheel Parts and they fixed me up in 10 minutes for like $10.

Then again, the same thing could be happening to you because you have some old tires that are just worn out (like stated above).

Take it as you will.

Big Tim,
Tire guys also make mistakes. If the tire was recently balanced, they might have made a boo-boo.
Another of the reasons I upgraded to Michelin was the the Good Year would go out of balance as they wore down.
