It's a very good picture of the 2008 4.7L engine.

Message: PCV valve & oil fill tube finally located where they should be,
no more cold weather 'milkshake' in front mounted oil tube.
Sparkplugs just got a little longer to replace but...I want one!

Message: What the H*LL? What's up with those spark plug wires? Did they do away from the coil on plug design?
I never had the milkshake, but I live in a warm climate.

Message: It still shows the COP design. The colis are right where we know them to be. They are taller and have a plug wire coming off going to the secondary plug at the bottom of the valve cover.
It looks similar to my (Toyota) Avalon's COP implementation. With it, there are three coils directly over a spark plug (as we have) located on the front cylinder bank. There is a plug wire leading from each of them to the corresonding plug on the other bank. One coil fires two different plugs at different times. This makes sense, because the firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6.
On the upcoming 4.7 it looks like we still have eight coils, they just fire two different plugs. Whether they fire staggered or simultaneously we don't know (yet).

Message: The AJC International Autoshow here in Atlanta is next week (10-18th). I was hoping they would have the 08 dakota here. the website doesn't say they will. But it does say they will have the challenger.
I was wanting to get an upclose view and ask the mopar folks more details on it, especially the "substantional" increase in fuel economy.
I'm going to try to find out who the local dodge dealer sponsors are and give them a call to confirm or deny the 08 dakota being at the show.

Message: Hmm.. they actually went through the trouble to add second spark plugs?
The intake is HIGHER. The alternator and A/C compressore are swapped.
The valve cover still doesn't look wide enough to be a DOHC rather than the SOHC.
Searching on that site. They say the new design has higher compression ratio and better flowing heads as well. 290HP and 320Ft Lbs of power.
Looks like that may just surpass the old 5.9 ratings.

Message: And it won't eat as much gas as the 5.9L engine! That's huge right there: nearly equal power (more HP, less TQ) and a smaller appetite.

Message: i dont think it is DOHC... maybe it is. to me, mileage matters alot, so long as it will still get the work done, over and over again.. which is basically the reason why i would choose a new silverado over any dodge. does anyone know the projected mileage ratings? if not dont start clapping yet.

Message: The reason Chevy gets better MPG than the rest is partially due to that they have FAR LESS metal holding the trucks together up front. For the last few years their vans and trucks have even had some plastic in places that you think is metal.
A big thing is Chevy hangs the fenders on the cab, and it is squared up and held in place simply by hanging onto the radiator support which is very basic. There is no inner fender support like on a Ford or many other trucks!
Go to Ford and find that section called "The Truth about Trucks" if it is still there. It shows a shop taking Ford, Dodge, Toyota, Nissan, GM apart. GM= WIMPY! But that would net some MPG if you don't care about strength in a truck.

Message: that may be true.. i know more than a few people that use their new or newer silverado with either the 5.3 or 4.8 as a work truck. some of them haul quite a bit of weight on a daily basis. at high mileage they still hold strong.

Message: I drove the 4.8 for a year in a 2WD RC 1500.
It had absolutely NOTHING from a dead stop.
I mean you could floor it and it would take off slow.
Then it would hit 3,000+ RPM's and take off like a raped ape. Kinda thought it was a V-Tec built by Honda or something!
After that I had a 6.0 Chevy 3500 work van for a while. It took off better from a dead stop and seemed even throughout the power band.
That 1 ton van had a better chance of spinning the tires as the 2WD 1500 with the 4.8 could ever do! (the 4.8 would NEVER spin a tire no matter what!)
The new Ford F3500 worktruck I drive now has the 5.4 and even though the truck is heavier by far, it is faster than that 4.8 Chebby and the 3500 6.0 Chebby was!
It also has Drive By Wire and a 5 speed auto which seems to (cough cough, can't believe I am saying this) have better ratios than our beloved 5-45RFE. The 1st gear is low like my 4.56's, maybe not as much but VERY close. And the 5th gear is closer to my old OD with my 3.55's
Yeah, the best of both worlds. :(

Message: personally, im not gonna pick a truck based on which one burns out or is faster. If you can get the job done with both, reliably, im gonna go with whats more efficient, and the cheaper price. thats me. plus i know the new vortechs last a long time so thats a bonus.

Message: I heard that it's going to produce 397HP with 456 foot pounds of torque. I may see about putting one of those in my truck. I'm worried since my truck hit 800,000 and am questioning the reliability part.
