Message: They are saying the 2005+ Daks are a Gen 3?
I thought those were Generation 4 Daks.
I've been calling my '01 Dak a Gen 3 since I've had it, in 2001.
I do like their site, adding your stored signature, etc. for FREE.

Message: Good try Dan, but not quite. Enthusiasts consider the later Gen 1 trucks with the longer nose for the v8 to be gen 2, while mopar considers them to all the same generation. That is the discrepancy. After the transition from the early boxy style ('97 ?), we consider to be the start of gen 3; while mopar calls that the start of gen 2. There is no break in generations between '99 and '00, no matter how you look at it.

Message: well kowalski you could break it up by saying the 4.7 replaced the 318
but yeah, i always consider mine gen I
91 the longer nose and available v-8 i thought was a big enoiugh design change to call it a new gen

Message: i thought anytime dodge redesigns the body style in anyway it was a new generation so 97-04 would be a gen 3 right? and the 05-07 a gen 4 and the newly designed nitro front is a gen 5

Message: Flippy - That depends on who you're talking to. As I said, that is how most enthusiasts would consider it; but mopar considers what we call gen 1 & 2 to all be the same generation. So if talking generations with a dealer, you'd have to subtract 1 from your numbers.
Super Bee - the introduction of the 4.7 is not considered a new generation.

Message: Forget the Gen 1,2,and 3!
Just say A body B body and so forth
Take me for example. I have a 02 so it would be called a C Body Right? As a matter of fact they called the 94-02 Dodge Ram RB series.

Message: Joe C. - definitely not. The name C body is already used to describe many of the larger mopar cars of the '60's and '70's vintage, such as a Polara. An A body is the smaller cars, like Duster, Demon, Dart, Valiant, and Barracuda throgh '69. (The Challenger and later Barracudas are E bodies.) And B body already refers to the midsize mopars of that era, like the Coronet, Sattelite, Charger, etc.

Message: Perhaps, Dan, that would be my best guess too. That would seem to be the common thread with the earlier car designations. The '70s F body cars (Aspen, Volare) shared some common parts and a similar size to the A body cars, but with sideways mounted torsion bars. I can think of an exception to that though; early A body cars (pre '67) had a narrower frame than the later A body cars - but that guess would seem to work for how the factory categorizes Dakotas.
Super bee - I understand what you said, I simply said that isn't the way it's done...
None of the car designations ever changed with the introduction of a new motor either.

Message: Kowalski is correct. 87-96 was a single generation to Dodge, labeled as an "N" Body. When they changed the nose in 1991 (to fit the new V8 option) it was simple product evolution, not a redesign of the platform. It still used the same cab, doors, fenders, bed, etc.. All that changed was the radiator support, hood, grill, headlamps, bumper and valance. Separating them into two separate generations was an Internet thing, most likely started on the Dakota Mailing List.
A 97-04 is designated as an "AN" body
05+ is an "ND" body so technically, it's a 3rd generation.
