Subject: door lock whine

Every time I lock my doors on my quad cab, my passenger rear door lets out an odd whine or squeal that sounds like the gears are slipping, but it locks fine every time. However it is loud and annoying. Any idea what it is and how to fix it before I take the door apart?

Mccamp,

The door lock actuator has gone bad. The sound you hear is the motor in the actuator continuing to move after the lock mechanism is moved. It should not be too difficult to replace, remove the door panel and moisture barrier. Take a look at the lock/door latch mechanism and follow its connecting rod down to the actuator.

The actuator should be bolted or screwed to the inside of the door. I don't know whether the rod mechanism can be disconnected separately from the actuator. It is probably a one-piece unit. The parts guy at the dealer will be able to tell you that, and maybe even print out the diagram of your door lock assembly. The connecting rod should run up into a round hole in a flat tang on the very bottom right hand side of the lock/latch assembly. Whan that part of the assembly is moved up or down, it locks and unlocks the door latch. Should be a fairly simple job of removing the old one and bolting in a new one.

If the OEM actuator (Dodge calls it a solenoid) is too expensive, an aftermarket door lock actuator will work just as well, and they cost about $20.00, maybe up to $30.00. But you will probably have to drill holes for it, it will most likely not mount up to the original bolt holes.

Either way, the actuator is bad, and replacement should be easy.

Jimmy
