Subject: Am I crazy for wanting to trade? IP: Logged
Message: My 04 GMC Sierra (reg cab, 292cid, 4x4) I bought gets good fuel mileage (21) and I’ve been getting good service with this truck. With the Hyper chip it fell more powerful than my 02 Dakota with its hyper chip plugged in.
Now I was thinking about trading my Dakota Club cab in for a 04 Hemi 2x4 Durango and my Sierra in for the fugly 05 Laramie Dakota. The truck that I’m looking at has a H.O 4.7L V8, qaudcab and it’s also a 4x4.
I’m I crazy for thinking trading in my Sierra or just don’t have a clue what I would be getting myself into?

Message: No Joe. Forget about the Dakota Quad cab! The H.O 287cid or 4.7L is not a ture High Output in the first place. It’s not even off-road capable! The engine is known to get to hot in off-roading with 4x4 is engaged.
But I would trade in for the Durango! They look pretty good and you might get the same fuel mileage! Not only that but you get better utility

Message: Personally, I would stick with the '04 Sierra. Nice mileage with a nice truck! I guess if you're looking for more power, I'd look at the new Tundra, new Silverado/Sierra, or Ram.
If you're still looking at Dakota's, wait for the '08 Dakota. Looks better, coil over suspension, and greatly updated 287 engine.
I'm not a huge fan of the Durango's, but they do have nice power and roominess.

Message: I agree, if you have something that works and gets good gas mileage, why trade it in for something that definitely wont get 21 mpg. You would already have a people mover in the durango, so keep the truck as a truck. Plus your shortbed GMC will still have a longer bed and likely tow more than a new dakota.

Well folks I just came from a GM dealer and I'm going looking for a GMC Canyon. The Colorado is alright but I just happen to look of the GMC.
Hey Joe and GMC man
What gear ratio you have. I herd you can get 4.10's in the rear. Even in the GM midsized trucks!
What looking for is a Canyon with the newer improved 3.7L I5 242HP/242ftbls toruqe.
Also I was asking if they had one with a 6 speed Manuel but the dealer said it only came with a 5 speed.

Message: Stay away frm the Canyon/Colorado if you are used to a Dakota.
Unless you want to go back to driving something that reminds you of how WIMPY trucks used to be.
Thin metal, six cylinder, etc.
And I have already heard flowmasters on them I-5 and I-6's. They just don't sound good!
If you want a chevy, go to a full size.
Another reason they get best mileage, is because they use very little metal to hold the front section together. Lighter = better MPG.

A Canyon? Is this really this STS guy, or the one that sometimes uses his screenname and spams him.
I'd be embarrassed, A Canyon? LOL
Even the hood on my 01 dak is double layer! Something fell off the shelf in my garage and put a small dent in the top of my hood. I couldn't even push it out, b/c of the double layer sheet metal, etc.

Message: honestly, i drive a dodge now. but i would rather cut my balls off than buy a new one. overall, from what alot of my friends are saying, the chevy fullsize is the best way to go all around. Best mileage BY FAR, pretty reliable, good towing capacity, and still gets good power. the colorado is a great rig for the dude that doesnt tow anything over 4000lbs( 19' boat, 20' camper). ive never heard of any problems with the colorado/canyon, except for the lack of power. but if the new 3.7L pushes the H3 down the highway, you wont have a problem with it in the colorado. Plus the 26MPG is very nice. something to look foward to as opposed to measley dakota mileage. I would definatly buy a new colorado as opposed to the dakota simply because of the mileage, and I will tow things like a 20' camper and what not, but nothing much over 4k definatly not exceeding 5k.
Bottom line ask yourself these questions. do you really tow alot? Do you like mileage? that will pretty much answer the question for the dakota over the colorado.

Message: Hey guys, if anything I love HP and Torque just like anyone else, but if you don’t need all that power and sizes why have it? Yes, even I thought about trading in for a Chevy Colorado when gas hit the roof at over 3 dollars a gallon!
I’m still looking at the Durango. I just don’t care that much for the Chevy Trailblazer. All they got is there little I6 motor and 5.3 V8 that’s not as powerful as the 5.7 Hemi option. Not only that but take a look at the interior of the two! I’ll take the Dodge any day. Not to big or small.
As for trading in my lovely GMC regular cap, strong pulling 4800 Vortech V8 and 3.72:1 rear end (great for towing and just cruising) I think I’ll just wait after all.
Thanks guys for adding your two cents.

Message: From what he said, installing a Hyperchip does give it more power. Don't know about fuel economy. He'll have to post that answer.
I think the Chevy Colordo is going to my next truck if not a full-size Sierra.

Message: Hey Jay,
It pulls a lot better if you install some add on's. Such as a Hyperchip,Magnaflow exaust and also a K&N airfilter.
The stock rating for the 2004 Vortec 4800 is this: 285HP 295 ftbls toruqe.
Now with a 3.72 rear gear its not so bad. But because it seem more like a car engine (loves to rev hi before reaching its toruqe peak) the Hyperchip solves this problem by adding more toruqe at a more useable RPM.
I can tow up to 2.5 tons with no problem.

Message: my fathers 2000 5.3L 4x2 tows 8k pretty good. dont know the gearing in it though.
my next truck is the silverado/sierra because i think it is a truck that has the best of both worlds.. it still pulls 8500lbs(5.3L), decent payload, and gets pretty good mileage. im gonna keep the 4.8 in mind though, as im sure it gets better mileage. definately not gonna go v6.

Message: The older 4.3 (260 cid) V6 actually has more power than the lighter I5 that’s replaced it in the smaller trucks. Why? Because its puts out more torque (260 VS 242 FTLBS)! Yes, and peaks sooner also.
As for what engine option you’re looking for you just have to think for yourself. I didn't want the Vortec 5300 because it’s only fair in gas mileage, but still much better than fuel gulping half a$$ed Hemi. Now the newer ones with Flex fuel V8 and DOD gets much better on the Hwy (22 MPG) and is useless in the city. So therefore I decided to opt for the 4800 because you get better in the city and you don't even need "half engine shut down" DOD on the Hwy. F##k!!! 21 miles per gallon is pretty dam good with a 3.72:1 rear end.

Message: the inline 5(3.5 or 3.7) is a bit smaller than the 4.3L. so its not a suprise that it has more torque.
