Subject: Thinking of purchasing a '06 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking of purchasing a '06 Dakota. I currently have a '93 Dakota and although it still runs really good, it has 171,000 miles on it and am thinking about getting something that is a little more reliable. I am planning on keeping the '93, but am wondering if anyone has any comments/opinions/concerns about the '06's. The dealership I am planning on getting it from has really good deals on '06 Dakotas right now. I am thinking about either a club cab or quad cab 4x4 with either the 4.7 or the 4.7 H.O.
Any opinions are welcome.
Thanks

Message: I'd consider an 08 if you can wait till December 25th through 31st. (best days of year to buy vehicle, dealer will bend over backwards to throw another sale under the final quarter of the years sales. My brother saved 5800.00 off the sticker by waiting till the 27th. His theory, no ones buying cars between christmas and new years, the lot is all yours, and they're desperate for that last sale.) The 2008 has a bolder look to it. More power in the 4.7 has been added plus better gas mileage. A remote starter is standard for the 2008 lineup. I was considering an 05 or 06 till I test drove it, Very dissappointed.

Message: Thanks, but I really can't wait that long and can't really pass up the deal I am getting on this '06 model. It is around $8,500 off! It is also the Night Runner edition. Test drove it last night and thought it drove a lot like my '93.

Message: You know what "that should" I thinking about the same as you!! I never thought in a million years I would for a GM compact or in this case "midsize" truck. If I was going to buy a midsize right now as (much as I hate to say it) It would be a GMC Canyon Z71! Sure it a gutless I5 engine but when mated with a 6 speed transmission I think it makes up for the lack up power.
Brandon!
"NOPE! I am still going to buy American while I can"
Well then stay away form DaimlerChrysler products! Did you know it’s a German company?
I would buy Japanese before I buy German any day of the week

Message: Yeah well, I am mostly german, so buying something from germany is a lot better for me. So, STS, you can go buy your Canyon Z71. I am going to stick with what I love, DAKOTAS. After all, thats what this site is about isn't it?

Message: How is it cheaper? I just looked
Colorado with ext cab and I-5= 21,400
Isuzu with ext cab and I-5= 23,500
Tacoma with ext cab and V-6= 20,900
Dakota with ext cab and V-8= 21,100
And none of these come close to the Dakotas Torque

Message: Brandon,
I bought an 06 Dakota 4.7 SLT Club Cab in December. I have owned 95, 98, 02 Dakotas--all great vehicles (a lot of brake problems with the 02). By far this is the best riding, most comfortable Dakota that I have owned. I really like the five speed automatic trans. The engineering improvements are tremendous. Much better ride and handling, drive train is smooth. The 4.7 V8 give me all the power that I need (tow a 4,000 pound boat). Don't see too many of them on the road in Connecticut--I am slowly getting used to the looks of the 06. I bought a Leer Cap that helped the looks a lot. The truck is bright silver. This is the first American vehicle that I have owned that on delivery was perfect and I have not had a problem to date (3,500 miles on it). Tonight, I drove home from Cape Cod (180 miles) and enjoyed every minute of it. Had the bed full of "stuff", my Golden Retriever and wife.
I too, got a great deal on it--about $8,000 off and they gave me $9,400 for my 02 with 108,000 miles on it. I was out the door for under $12,500. I don't think you can do much better than that. I am very happy with the truck--hope it works out for you. You need to be your own judge--everyone told me how bad the new truck was. Best of luck!! Fishful Thinking (boat's name)

Message: heydouche, We are talking about trucks somewhat comparable to an extended cab V-8 dakota. Read the very first post. Your I-280 has a 4 cyl and the only colorado for that price is a regular cab 4 cyl. Maybe someday when I want to buy a gocart with a grocery basket on the back instead of a truck I will ask for your advice.

Message: Hey Fishful,
Thanks for your input. Its nice to get a straight opinion out of someone who is actually talking about the Dakota and not a GM or Toyota product. I think I am going to like it as well. I am going to pick it up tonight. And yes, you really can't turn down a deal like that. I thought the deal I was getting was incredible, so I went after it. They were only going to give me $1,250 for my '93 Ext. Cab 4x4 3.9L with 171,000 miles on it, so I am keeping it. Not sure what I am going to do with it, but it still is a good truck, just has a few issues.
Thanks again.

Message: I saw a Dakota Night Runner the other day. Despite the fulgy front end it looked good. Great move: buy the new one and keep the old one instead of let it go to the dealer for who knows how they'll dispose of it.

Thanks funny, I'd like to see them try. Dump trucks with a full load will be out accelerating them!

Message: I've been seeing alot of the 05-07 on the road around here lately.
I was thinking of getting an 06 because they had great deals on them (7500 off). So I was looking at 17-19k minus my trade in (02 QC 4x4 4.7L SLT+ with 70k miles). I would have had a very very low monthly payment. The 06 rode enough like my 02 i coudln't tell the difference.
But I decided too hold off for a few reasons.
1) 08 will be out end of this year, more hp/torque and supposedly more mgp.
2) the ram is getting revamped for 09 (Q4 08 availablity).
I can wait 1 more year and get 08 or 09 revamped dakota or ram. There's nothing wrong with my current 02. I still have 100k miles to go before I reach the same milage on my old 95. even at 20k miles a year that's 5 years to go.
So i'm waiting until something else comes out that i can't pass up.
- Dan M
