Subject: Squeaking!!! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dakota 2wd 3.9L auto and my problem is this. I have had a slight squeak for a while now over bumps, anoying but i can live with it. Now EVERY BUMP AND TURN of the wheel it is making this horrible sound. It sounds like an old bed when you jump on it that is the only way i can relate it only its much louder and sounds more harsh. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be??? bushings ball joints shock mounts??? Thank you in advance.

Message: hi georgy, where is the sound mainly coming from, because if you say mostly the rear end could be the leaf spring bushings, or the truck bed itself, also if it is coming from the front end, could be any number of things but you have to narrow it down or just take it to a lube shop and ask them to lube everything underneith that moves or has bushings.

Message: My durango does that but mostly only in dry weather. when it rains or is wet it won't do it. I figure dry bushings cause it and when wet it will kind of lubricate them a tad. You may consider Prothane poly front control arm bushings from Summitracing.com. Or just lube them with WD-40 or some other lubricant often. Otherwise you will just have to drive through puddles a lot like me.

Message: yes it is coming from the front end and i tried lithium grease and it didnt do anything so i am thinking i am going to have a lubeshop do it. it should only be a few bucks i think.

Message: Do this first. With the truck on a flat surface, use a 1/2 socket and remove the end caps that hold the poly donut bushing on to the end of the sway bar. Remove the bushing. Clean the bushings, the bar ends, the caps, and the a-arm mounting point.
Apply a liberal amount of Mobile 1 synthetic wheel bearing grease to those cleaned areas.
Re-assemble.
That will most likely cure the problem.

Message: Good answer boB. Georgy.... You need to get that grease off your bushings as it will rot them. The mobil 1 syn grease is the proper thing to use. Should you deside to try a spray lub or penetrater, Be sure it is synthetic. Most have patroliem distillates in them.

Message: one thing georgy when your ball joints are worn, they usually make a clicking or clunking sound, not really a squeaking sound, could also be your motor mounts as well, but like i said before i would have it all lubed just to be on the safe side, and once your truck is up in the air have them check the ball joints for play anyway.

Message: I had the SAME EXACT problem, annoying as freakin' hell, however,
IT WASN'T THE BALL JOINTS!!! It was the control arm bushing.
The ball joints were my first thought as well, but they weren't the
source of the sound. Flippy is correct about the popping, ball
joints don't squeak. I can say i'm pretty sure its your control arm
bushing. Check those first. Mine was my drivers side, however it
may be different for you.

Message: you know what i think you guys are a 100 percent right. just this morning i had my wheel turned all the way to the left cause it sounds like it is coming from the side closest to the firewall and i ducked down and stuck my head in the well while my budy pushed the truck up and down and wouldnt you know it the bushing dry rotted there and was half broken. So now my question is how can i stop or fix this without spending an a$$load of cash on the removal of the control arm. From what i understand it wont really effect the driving but will make you go mad! You guys are awesome i really appreciate all the help.

Message: oh yeah and why would it squeak when i turn? is it because of the slight flex in the control arm from the ball joint?

Message: Mine did the same when I turned too. But I don't know how to do it
yourself. I spent $100 on the replacement and labor when I found
out what it was. 1. I wsnt in the mood to do it myself 2. I didn't
wan't to F-up anything. I had it done at Sears. But they "forgot" to
lubricate the new one, so it made the same sound for a day, but I
took it in the next day and they lubricated it for free. They say the
guy had a shift change between working on my truck and going to
someone elses car. So I mean, If you trust Sears or someone like
that to do it, go for that. Someone else would have to tell you how
to DIY.

Message: WOW i cant believe they only charged you a 100 dollars. thats a pretty good deal because they would have to disconnect the upper ball joint and unbolt the control arm. and put it back together with new bushings plus get an alignment. WOW

Message: How are we talking about two different things? He was wondering
how they only charged me $100. Oh yeah, by the way, it was more
like $150-ish, I looked at the receipt in my truck. It was like
$30-40 or something for the part, and then $100 for the labor. I
can't remember the exact numbers, but it was around there.
