Message: It's called a Cummins turbo diesel. May not quite meet your horsepower standards but I believe it should exceed your desired minimum torque by a 'reasonably comfortable' margin.
And that's while still pulling mileage in the mid or upper teens which a gasser with those capabilities would never, ever do.

Message: It's a marketing game these manufacturers are playing with gas engines. One day everybody else has 380 LBS torque then one manufacturer makes a truck with 381 and all of a sudden everybody thinks it's a huge deal that blows every other manufacturer out of the water. You want the end all, be-all of torque, take your pick of domestic diesel 3/4 tons instead of a half ton. Those diesel HDs cost about as much new as they charge in the first year of a new model design of any well-equipped half ton anyway and they're all making 500-600 pounds of torque and 300-350 horses. Plus 600 dollars will bump each of those numbers up by 1-200.

Message: also remember those are probably just peak numbers of a narrow powerband somewhere in the useless range for a truck.
ultimate towing go diesel. that yota is probably a 3/4 ton truck in 1/2 ton clothing. try comparing it to an HD Ram.

Message: Well shure it is! Same goes for the Nissan Titan. Just a 3/4ton truck in 1/2 ton clothing. Even the F-150 in no 1/2 ton truck by any means. It will even hold more payload than a Ram 2500 (2500lbsVS3000lbs).
I believe it as GM that got all the BS started. Remember the 1500 HD?

Message: Just to add a bit more here. Since gas is cheeper than diesal. I found it to be a shame that Dodge no longer has a Big gas engine like 488 V10. I wonder how would a 505 cid V10 in a HD truck work out?

Message: I was never a fan of the Ram V10 I guess. They sound kind of funny to me. When gas hits $3-4 a gallon again you better have a 2nd and perhaps a 3rd job to pay for fuel.
Even though diesel is more per gallon, you go a lot farther on one gallon in diesel.

Message: You think Dodge's V10 sounds funny, our detention vans we drive at work are all E30 V10s. Those things have the sorriest, most pathetic exhaust note I have ever heard from big displacement truck engines. They sound like Ford Festivas with holes in the muffler.

Message: Well my 02 4.7L SLT Dakota has the best V8 exaust note (of course Magnaflow does help out a lot in power and sound)
But would have traded in my dakota (with already 110,000 miles on the meter) if I could have had a Hemi option with MDS.
But NOOOO, they just didn't want to put it in there. Funny to me, even the much smaller 287 could produce just as much toruqe as the larger 345 cid Hemi!!!!
The gas milage on my truck isn't all that bad, about 17 at best. Of course its got 3.92 rear and 4x4.
Dodge probably had the best Big block of the bunch with its 8 litre V10. As a matter of fact there was a guy that I was chatting with who had one. Single cab, 4x4 NV-4500 and claims to get over 15 on the hwy.

Message: seriously. trucks have been hauling loads forever. remember the 80's. a 318 had 160hp. still got the job done though. you dont need 400 horses under the hood. you do need an engine with the power in the right areas like low end. Dumbazz people think just cause its cranking a sh!t ton of peak power it can haul anything. Id gladly take a huge peak power cut in exchange for good low end, reliability and decent mileage.

Message: jayb you're absolutely right.
This is why our Dakotas with ANY of our V8s (5.2, 5.9 and 4.7) can haul and tow so much more weight easier than tacomas, colorados, frontiers, etc. It's not about peak HP, it's about low end torque. That's why diesels are so great at it.
