Message: Hey all,
I have an '02 4x4 Dakota with 82,000 km's and looking at replacing the shocks.
I have three options:
1.) Edelbrock Performer IAS
2.) KYB Monomax
3.) Rancho RS9000
I mainly drive on road, however I do like to go offroad. Nothing major, just mid sized rocks and dips and bumps and major washboard.
I don't want to stiffen up the ride, but not too much. I hate how the back end swings out on washboard.
Also, on a side note. If a shock is starting to go, could it possibly create a shimmy when braking? I know the rear drivers side is leaking, and I had the drums turned (No sensation int he steering wheel). Its periodic as it doesn't do it all the time. I don't want to turn the front rotors yet (powerslots) as I'm wondering if it could be due to a bad shock.

Message: The tendency for the rear to step out is related to the stock shock valvling not being well suited to the spring rate. There's a couple different types of Edelbrock IAS, the cheaper monoshock IAS (Summit hide these on sale for $25 a while ago, don't know if they still might) solved that nicely for me.

Message: I replaced mine at 65,000 miles with Bilstein HD monotubes. A little pricey, but so far well worth the money. I've got an '02 4x4 QC.
The stockers seemed really firm when new and you'd get the rear end bouncing when going over bumps on the highway. The Bilstein's seem similar in firmness, but the bouncing tendandcy seems to be far less. I haven't taken it off road however.

Message: I have an 01 QC 4x4. I do about the same kind of driving you do.
I've had rancho RS5000's on mine for over 50K miles. A huge improvement in ride quality and control over stock. I'm very pleased. I got mine on sale from Summit.
I've also heard good things about the Monroe Reflex.

Message: Continuing on with the brake shimmy:
The shimmy is only felt in the seat... however I did notice that if I let go of the steering wheel, it does have a tendancy to have a bit of side to side movement.
I can also feel int he brake pedal a bit of a vibration. Should I wait for the new shocks to see if the shimmy goes away, or should I just go ahead and turn the front rotors?
Kowalski, how do the Edelbrock shocks handle off road, how are they on the street (Like do you feel all the road imperfections (I currently do with the stock shocks right now)).

Message: I don't do any serious offroading with a plow frame, but I am on logging trails from time to time, and they were a big improvement over stock both on and off. My suspension is more taught than most, being set up for towing and plowing; so I don't focus on road feel over imperfections like someone expecting a car feel might. Being a RC, mine had the tendency to step out over a bump in a turn as bad as any (the same sensation I'm sure you notice on washboard). Worse than any other truck I've owned (7 to the best of my recolection), I found it less disconcerting when I realized that after it hopped it would land well planted (single bump, not washboard). After the shock change, my wife was no longer afraid to drive the truck, big difference.

Message: I have a '01 RC 2wd with Edelbrock IAS. I will "second" Kowalski on the bumps in curves. We have a sweeping Interstate curve locally that has a sizeable bump/ pavement divider right in the center of the curve. The OEM shocks would allow the rear to become airborne for a split second. The IAS absorbs the pop and keeps going: no sweat. I was really amazed how the IAS transformed the handling of the Dak. I have heard the Monroe Reflex have similar results, at less cost.

Message: I have $350.00 of Edelbrock shocks with under 300 miles on them.
Only time the truck bottomed-out. Only time the truck topped-out. At the same time.
Went back to stock.

Message: I've upgraded to Bilsteins on each of the 3 Dakota's I've owned. Even though they are expensive, I really like the firm but not harsh ride. And they really do quell the rear axle hop that others have mentioned in earlier posts. Just my $.02...

Message: Shatto - sounds like you either got a bad set of shocks, or more likely, shocks that were too short for your aplication. You're the only one we've ever heard of claiming to have had a problem with these shocks !

Message: Before forking over the dough, I e-mailed, more than once, and checked the website of Edelbrock, and the parts guy at the now closed 'Performance Parts Store' checked the manual and all concurred the shocks were right for Dakota/Durango use.
The factory said they would not honor the satisfaction guarantee and that I had to go back through the now closed store where I bought them.
Jack Palance, in City Slickers and Jessie Ventura, in Preditor, sum up my attitude to this whole matter with; "I crap bigger than you." and "I ain't got time to bleed."
On the other hand, there is too much Scottish blood in me to throw them away.
