Subject: Question about Y-pipe and Skid Plates IP: Logged
Message: I'm debating whether to put off the Hypertech for a while again, and get a magnaflow y-pipe fabbed up with a new magnaflow hi-flow cat.
I'm thinking of going with a 2.5 into 3" y-pipe, into a 3" cat, into a 3" cutout, and then reduced into 2.5" to fit the muffler I've got now.
That way it won't restrict down to a single 2.5 pipe when the cutout's open for when I want the exhaust completely unrestricted (It will go from dual 2.5 into single 3).
I'll still have the magnaflow muffler for everyday driving when performance isn't my main goal. From what I've heard 2.5" from the manifolds is too big but I think it might work well with the 50mm TB I want to get. Since these truck 318s seem to run out of breath past 4k rpm maybe this will help it breathe.
I think I might see more of an increase with the tb/exhaust than the Hypertech from what I've heard with the 318, and I want whatever I get to WORK!!!
Anyways, now that you know what I want to do, I was wondering if there would still be clearance for skid plates if I chose to get some. I heard that one of the reasons the stock y-pipe is crushed in one spot and is so small is so it would fit under the skid plate.
Right now I don't have any skid plates, truck never came with them, but I don't do any hard off-roading (yet) because I don't want to damage anything.
Thanks.

Message: What year is your truck? I've got an 02 with 2 of the 3 mopar skid plates (front suspenstion and transfer case). I don't have the fuel tank skid plate. The fuel tank skid plate was a composite while the front suspension and transfer case are metal. If/when i decide i need a fuel tank skid plate, I'll fab something up from metal.
Now, having said that. My skid plates don't come anywhere near the exhaust.
The front suspension skid plate is mis-named in my opinion. It actually covers the shaft coming out of the transfer case into the front axle. The transfer case covers the t-case itself (though not enough of it in my opinon).
All pieces bolt to the frame. The t-case plate and the front suspension overlap and bolt into the same holes.
Let me know if I'm misunderstanding what you're looking for.

Message: I think you pretty much answered my question. Basically I was wondering if I got a bigger y-pipe would it interfere if I put on some skid plates. I just noticed that the exhaust goes up above the front driveshaft so I know it'll be OK there. I just wanted to make sure that it would be clear of the y-pipe if I chose to get some skid plates down the road.
Thanks.

Message: The front suspension skid plate does hang down a good distance. If you are walking up on the truck in a flat parking lot you can see it below the front fascia.
