My friend just changed his rear axle in his 89 Cherokee and put a locker in it, his old axle has a trac-lock posi in it any body know if a bolt in axle shaft rear Dana 35 Trac-lock carrier will fit into a c-clip Dana 35 Dakota front axle With the right spider gears for the c-clip axle shafts?

Some one out there has to have put a posi in the front of their Dakota.

Any body got any ideas?

All I have been able to find out is that the diff carrier will fit into the housing but I still don't know how to get my c-clip axle shafts to stay in place in a non c-clip Trac-Lock.

A posi is not recommended in the front of a Dakota because of the design of front axle assembly. A 91+ Dakota does not have a CAD in the front diff and still turns the front drive shaft even when in 2wd. Because there is no way to disengage the left and right half shafts from each other, an open diff is required. A posi would bind when making left and right turns and would quickly eat up the clutches in the unit. Years ago, I tried modifying one for my 88 Dakota and even with the CAD, the unit didn't last long.

I'll worry about how long it is going to last but for now its free and this truck is not my daily driver. I just want to know if it is possible to get it to work.

The only locker to use on a front axle is an ARB? air locker. Far as I know they still do not make one for the Dakota. Might try contacting them for an update.

I've used a mini-spool in a Dana44 front axle in an 1976 Chevy K5 Blazer as a cheap-do-it-yourself-locker, of course it had manual hubs to free wheel when street driven.

off-road, after many broken hubs & axle u-joints, it was easier to drive in '3-wheel drive',
leaving the driver's side hub on 'unlock',
stepping out to lock it only when challenged with a deep mudhole, un-locking as soon as the obstacle was passed.

this was fantastic traction (LSD in rear axle too)
but needed low speed and constant attention when driving in fully locked mode.

under power, there was so much binding in the front axle assembly that the steering wheel could'nt be turned more than 1/4 turn without something binding/breaking.

expect about the same with a trak-lock if there are no manual hubs or axle disconnect to free-wheel the axle.

Lockers are only good in deep snow or Ice. Just My way of seeing it. Consider I had this setup in 2 rigs during my real serious hunting days.

They make an ARB locker for the dana 35 in the fronts of the 97-99 dakotas but its around $900 with the compressor to engage it. The factory trac-lock I have is free!!! Meaning all i have to do is bolt it in and set the backlash of the gears again, if I can get spider gears for a c-clip dana 35 trac-lock.

Back to my question can I get c-clip type trac-lock spider gears for a dana 35, the only dana 35s I have worked on have been bolt in axle models, except the front diff in my truck of course.

I found out i was mistaken about what held the axleshafts in the differential on the front axle of my truck. The axle has E-clips not C-clips so different spider gears are not required. Which means i will have a free posi in my front diff in the next couple weeks. Will also be going to 4.56 gears to offset the damage done to the power of my 318 by the 33in tires.
