Subject: trans wont go in 4 IP: Logged
Message: I dont know what is going on but i started up my truck today and drove to work doing 50 the whole way on the highway. The dang thing wont go into 4th gear. This happened before when its really cold and i would drive a block and then have to put it in park and go again and it was fine. This time no matter what i did restart, put in park, everything. Any ideas, is it just the extreme cold messing with me? I have a 99 V6 club cab RWD with auto.
Thanks

Message: trans fluid seems to be ok. I was thinking it had something to do with the thermostat or coolant temp. sensor because it does take forever to get the temp up. I drove it pretty hard trying to get it to shift on the highway doing 3500rpms im surprised i didnt blow the tranny. it never did this before so i am baffled.

Message: Depends where you live and what you call "cold".
I started my 04 Dak this morning at minus 24 C, about 12 below in Fahrenheit. The lifters hammered a bit because I didn't plug it in, and the tranny stayed in third for about four hiway miles. Then it dropped into first OD, then a mile later into final OD. There is a temp limiter in the tranny. Sometimes they stick.
Best thing is to start in "neutral" but make sure the truck won't roll. The fluid warms up in neutral, but not in park. I idled the engine about 5 minutes before dropping into drive, and taking it easy.

Message: well today it was 2 below so i am thinking that is pretty cold must just be the way these trucks are but i figured after 15 miles it should have warmed up but the fix you gave me seems reasonable enough to try. Thanks

Message: The computer will not allow torque converter lockup or overdrive engagement until approx. 60 degrees operating temperature has been reached. In extreme cold, it may not achieve that temp. Cold radiator= cold tranny. Til it warms up, you're stuck with the front three.

Message: I've made trips of 40kms all highway in 3rd gear...i can pretty much watch the gas needle go down. When i bought it, a guy who used to work at Chrysler told me about something they put on the front on the tranny cooler to help this, but he said NOT to get this, it only makes it worse. Instead he said to put cardboard in front...i do that, and it still is cold, hardly reaches operating temp. But this is at -30c...-22f
Yea, it's temp regulated, to prevent overdrive from taking a dump on the highway.

Message: Ha ha. You think I live in a cold place? I used to live in a colder place yet where we didn't shut our engines off during the day if we were getting back in the cab within a half hour.
The town changed the by-law to allow vehicle idling with the doors locked, but we had to carry a spare door key. Once I locked both sets of keys in the car with the engine running at 40 below, and had to use a screwdriver and coathanger.
Anyway, I live in a 'warm' area now, at the top of the Great Lakes, in Espanola, Ontario. Pretty country, fresh air, and not as cold as up north. If you check the lattitude, I live south of the line that makes up the Can/US border west of Lake Superior. When I visit NY State or even southern Ontario, I find it is very damp. Dry cold up here. Snow crunches under the tires/boots.
