Message: I don't think the old 340 is the same block as the 318, although the 318 is an old engine too. Is it a newer 5.2 or an older 318? Even then I think they are different, but I could be wrong.

Message: Yup. The original 318, 340, and 360 were all the "LA" family - slightly different blocks, same exhaust manifold bolt patern. Pattern continued to be the same with 5.2/5.9 magnum.

Message: may be the same bolt pattern, but don't the exhaust ports have to be the same size? And are they? It may have been hype, but when I was a kid in the 70's, having a 318 instead of a 383 was akin of having a 327 instead of a 396. Only having a 273 slant six was lower. lol

Message: Little jer - now you are comparing an LA motor to a B motor; and a Chevy mouse to the Chevy rat. We aren't comparing small blocks to big blocks - that combination is definitely NOT compatible.
LOL yourself !

Message: just stating the fact that a 318 wasn't highly regarded as a powerhouse in the past. now days with all these small cube engines ( I've got more displacement in my Pepsi bottle than some of these samll cars ) it has risen above it's daddy's ashes.

Message: No you weren't, dear, you were implying the exhaust manifolds might be wrong. This sort of behaviour is why someone recently asked you if "little jer" was short for little jerk.
Run along and play nice now !
