Subject: Transmission cooler damage IP: Logged
Message: Hello, My transmission cooler has been damaged and I now have a leak. I'm replacing it, but I have to drive Scooter a few days till then. Can it be bypassed and is it something that I, a beginner DIY can do. I have replaced my own brakes and helped install my own CAI if that's a help.
I'd like to do it myself for the experience, but am afraid of maybe getting into something too deep, and then being stuck w/out a vehicle.
I've found it at my dealer for $160, but will also be checking the parts shops, although that price doesn't sound too bad.
Also, the reason I found out the cooler was damaged is that my truck was shifting a bit when it shouldn't have been. I got out and saw fluid in the snow, and the stick showed just above the 'add'. It is running completely normal now, but I'm worried that it may have been compromised, even though I caught it before it dropped below 'add'. I'm checking the level.
Some FYI's -
It is an '03 QC 4WD 128K (I bought it new).
I had it dealer serviced last summer for the transmission (Flush, change/replace, refill).
I have not towed anything for several months.
Thank you in advance...

Message: Guessing it's the external cooler in front of the radiator you're talking about, and not the one in the radiator. It has special fittings that connect it to the fluid lines. Not hoses on nipple fittings like aftermarket style.

Message: It can be done, but it's not particularly easy. You'de have to fab a bypass hose with the correct fittings.

Message: Thank you Marv and .boB
I did go ahead and remove it yesterday, it was not an easy task. I'm not bypassing it, because it doesn't seem to be worth it and would cost time and $ that I would only end up spending anyway on the new cooler.
I borrowed a truck I'm picking up the new one today. At least my truck is nice and warm and dry, as it got to spend the night in the garage...
